Democrats would choose Magistrate 1 candidate at District level

Precinct officers would choose a nominee in the Democratic Party Process; Independent Gene Dale Holmes has officially filed, getting jump on major parties. Republicans may choose Monday night from several names, listed below, including one surprise one
By Ed Waggener

Adair County Democratic Chair Evelyn Phelps said today that the State Democratic Party has sent instructions on the party process for selecting a candidate, if any, to run for the unexpired term of First District Magistrate Roger Stephens.

Democratic Party Rules are different than those in the Republican Party, she said, "The County Democratic Executive Committee isn't involved at all," she said. "The Democratic precinct committee members in District 1 will have to take any and all action to name a candidate," she said in a telephone call at 3:00pm CT today, Tuesday, July 10, 2007.

Phelps said that she has informed one of the precinct leaders, David Giles of Eunice-Pellyton. If any action is taken he or one of the other five precinct leaders will have to take it, she said.

District 1 has three precincts, which include Little Cake and White Oak in addition to Eunice-Pellyton.The precinct leaders are as follows:
  • Eunice-Pellyton: David Giles, Dallas Cole, and Teresa Giles.
  • Little Cake: Anna Burton.
  • White Oak: Fred Dalton and Eva Adamson.
Phelps said that she does not know of any interest being shown by any Democrat in the District.

Already, Independent Candidate Gene Dale Holmes, who ran second to Roger Stephens in the 2006 election, has qualified.

The Adair County Republican Executive Committee, including Chairman Benton Fudge, and members Lisa Lee, Tim Bradshaw, and Jason Cross. will hold a nominating meeting on Monday night, July 16, at 6:00pm at the Adair Annex building to accept nominations. Lisa Lee said today that she will suggest that the Executive Committee go ahead Monday night and name the party's nominee to give the party's candidate more time to campaign.

A large number of individuals are known to be interested or actively seeking the Republican nomination. They are Donnie Curry and Harold Burton, from Little Cake precinct, Steve Moore and Charles Shepherd of White Oak Precinct; and Bill Troutwine and Darrell Absher, and , just today, a surprise candidate, Danny Goodin of the Little Cake precinct.

Republicans outnumber Democrats by almost 10 to 1 in the District.

At present, the district is without representation on the court, and local Republican leaders do not know if Gov. Fletcher will name one prior to the November 6, 2007 general election.
