Kids learn about nature, forest fires, fire safety at DU event Kids get expert training from Kentucky Forest Rangers, Ducks Unlimited personnel, and Adair Sportsman's Club members 11 Photos by Sean Hitchcock and Joe Hare accompany this article By Sean Hitchcock Parents from around the region brought their children to the Adair County Sportsman's Club Saturday, June 16, 2007, to experience and learn about outdoor sports and safety at the seventh annual Ducks Unlimited Kid's Day. Children of all ages spent Saturday morning participating in fishing, archery and target-shooting activities before feasting on pizza and hot dogs before leaving. Along with the Ducks Unlimited staff giving lessons on outdoor sports and gun safety, Kentucky Forest Rangers were also on hand to teach children lessons about nature, forest fires and fire safety. "Our purpose is to try to educate children about enjoying the outdoors and firearm safety because a lot of parents don't have the opportunity to do it," Ducks Unlimited Regional Chairman Paul Burton said. "There's a lot of kids that don't get to go fishing and get outdoors, and we're trying to get them out of the house and away from the computer games so they can learn about these things. They're our future, we need to teach them these things while we can," he added. Burton said a lot of planning goes into organizing the event that has previously averaged in attendance around 50-170 visitors. This year, he said the attendance was slightly down and averaged somewhere in the middle range. This story was posted on 2007-06-17 04:15:44
