Obituary: Robert (Bob) K. Allender, 74, retired Regional Librarian

Mr. Allender was a devoted United Methodist, a veteran, and a man who had earned high respect in his profession and in the community he adopted as a very young man

Robert (Bob) K. Allender, 74, of 300 West Frazier, Columbia, KY, died Wednesday, May 30, 2007, at his residence after an illness.

He was the son of the late Harry Bedford and Minnie Evelyn Bramlett Allender.

Mr. Allender was a member of the Columbia United Methodist Church, where he sang in the choir for many years. He was a US Army Veteran, a member of Columbia Lodge #96, and was retired from the Kentucky Department for Libraries and Archives.

He had moved to Columbia when he was in his early 20s to take a position as a local library director. He was warmly accepted in social circles. He married here, raised a successful family here, and lived out his active life in a leadership role in his adopted community. He was a quiet soft-spoken man, but his underlying strengths were evidenced through his joyous, wonderful performances with the Columbia United Methodist Church Choir.

At the time of his death Mr. Allender was retired from his post as Regional Librarian for the Lake Cumberland Area District. During his tenure as leader of the libraries, Mr. Allender presided over unprecedented library progress, including the construction of new buildings in some communities, and significant renovation of existing ones in others.

While he was Regional Librarian, Mr. Allender maintained headquarters for the system within the Janice Holt Giles Memorial/Adair County Public Library Building in Columbia, KY, which gave an added source of pride for the community.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Endicott Allender, Columbia, KY, and the following:
