That Perfect Day: Gov. Fletcher at Bypass groundbreaking

Governor Ernie Fletcher told the 500-plus crowd at the groundbreaking ceremony that the Western Bypass around Columbia was part of a catch-up in state projects to correct an imbalance of good roads in Adair County. The groundbreaking celebration was held Tuesday, May 15, 2007, at Adair County Elementary School. No one got more applause than Curtis Hardwick, former Columbia Mayor Curtis Hardwick got when his name was mentioned from the platform during the groundbreaking ceremony for the Western Bypass around Adair County. Hardwick never let the Governor, Cabinet Secretary Bill Nighbert, or Commissioner Williams forget how important the bypass is to Columbia, since joining the Fletcher Administration. Harwick is shown here before the ceremonies got underway. Columbia Mayor Pat Bell. always a platform favorite, quipped that he had told Superintendent Darrell Treece, "We haven't had rain in 20 days," he said he said, "and then Governor Fletcher comes to town and we're blessed with a shower." Rain had threatened the celebration, but the skies brightened by the time the Governor arrived. Mayor Bell said, "This is a red-letter day for Adair County." Senator Williams,, the Republican leader whose district formerly included Adair County, continued to champion the bypass and LBN/KY 61 interchange as much after the county was taken from his district as before.
