Obituary: John D. Lowe II, 81, Adair business, civic leader

Mr. Lowe will be greatly missed. He leaves a legacy of service to his church, country, and community. John D. Lowe III was successful businessman of unquestioned integrity, who was active in all affairs of Columbia and Adair County life. He maintained and added much to the distinguished tradition of a great Adair County family

John D. Lowe II, 81, 307 Jamestown Street, Columbia, KY, passed away Monday, March 26, 2007, at 7:55am at Westlake Regional Hospital after a short illness.

The funeral service for Mr. Lowe will be Wednesday, March 28, 2007, at 1:00pm CT, at the Columbia Christian Church, 206 Campbellsville ST, Columbia, KY, with Bro. Terry White, Bro. Raymond Martin, and Bro. Tim Dennis officiating. Burial will be in Columbia Cemetery.



He was born September 18, 1925, the son of the late John D. and Alleen Ritchey Lowe, Jr., of Columbia, KY.

Mr. Lowe was a member of the Columbia Christian Church and a graduate of Lindsey Wilson College. He graduated from the University of Kentucky School of Pharmacy in 1951.

He was a Deacon of the Columbia Christian Church and was treasurer of the church since 1959.

He was a member of the Columbia Utilities Commission from 1966-1974, then from 1976-1998. He was chairman of the commission since 1984 and remained in that capacity until his retirement in December, 1998.

He was a former member of the Columbia Rotary Club.

He was Vice President of the Columbia Cemetery, Inc.

He was a life member of the University of Kentucky Alumni Association, a member of of the University of Kentucky College of Pharmacy Alumni Association.

He was a Mason, a member of Columbia Lodge #96 F. & A.M. He was a member of the Taylor County Chapter #9 of the Royal Arch Masons.

Mr. Lowe served on the Columbia City Council from 1966 until 1972.

He served in the U.S. Navy from January 1944 until June 1946 at Great Lakes Naval Training School and served aboard the USS Benevolence.

He was employed by Collins Drug Company from 1951-1955, and at Frankfort Drugs from 1955-1956. He was a pharmacist at Young Rexall Drug in Columbia, KY, from 1956 to 1957. In 1957, he purchased Brown Drug Store, Columbia, KY, on November 7, 1957, and operated that business as Lowe's Drugs until 1982. He operated Madison Square Drug Store on Burkesville Street from 1982 until his retirement in December, 1994.

Mr. Lowe was preceded in death by his wife, Olive Richards Lowe, on October 22, 2005.

He is survived by one daughter, Connie Babakian and her husband, Fred, Nashville, TN, and the following:
  • Two sisters: Elizabeth Whitfield, Bowling Green, KY; and Mary Ritchey Bennett, Columbia, KY

  • One granddaughter: Amy, and her husband, Duane Woodard, Hendersonville, TN

  • One great grandson: Dylan Woodard

  • Two nephews: Dr. John Blair, Bell Buckle, TN; and James E. Bennett, Columbia, KY

  • Two nieces: Suzanne Dennis, White Mills, KY; and Mary Beth Phelps, Columbia, KY
Visitation will be at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home, 210 Greensburg ST, Columbia, KY, after 2:30pm CT, Tuesday, March 27, 2007.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of a donation to the Columbia Christian Church Building Fund or the Columbia Cemetery Beautifucation Fund and may be left at the funeral home.

Columbia was saddened by the passing of a leading citizen, John D. Lowe III, early this morning, Monday, March 26, 2007. He was 81.

Visitation will be tomorrow afternoon after 2:30pm, at Stotts-Phelps-McQueary Funeral Home.

The funeral will be Wednesday, March 28, 2007, at 1:00pm, at Columbia Christian Church.
