March is Giles Society membership month

March is membership month for the Giles Society, in remembrance of Janice Holt Giles' birthday.

It is time to renewmembership or become a new member by sending a check made out to: The Giles Society for $30 or more. Send it to The Giles Society, Box 932, Columbia, KY 42728.

All donations/memberships are tax deductible because you receive no gifts or services. Janice Holt Giles was born March 28, 1905 in Altus, Arkansas. She was bornin the home of her Grandmother McGraw, Dianne Watkins writes in her book Janice Holt Giles, A Writer's Life.

Members of the Giles Society know they help to preserve a special area of Kentucky and America.



They know they help sponsor programs that enrich the lives of the young, middle aged, and old folks through their membership support.

Categories for memberships are named after Giles book titles. The categories are:
  • The Kentuckians: $30 - $50;
  • 40 Acres and No Mule: $51 - $100;
  • Shady Grove: $101 - $250;
  • Around Our House: $251 - $500;
  • A Little Better Than Plumb: $501 - $1,000;
  • The Enduring Hills: $1,001 - $5,000;
  • The Believers: $5,001 or more.

Janice Holt Giles was born on March 28, 1905 at this house in Altus, Arkansas. Mrs. Giles died in Adair County in 1979, and is buried alongside her husband, Henry Giles, in the cemetery at Caldwell Chapel, on Caldwell Ridge between Knifley and Pellyton, KY.
