Feese announces March 29 rally for Richards-Brown

Event at VFW Hall at Fairgrounds is Thursday, March 29, 2007. Details are still being worked out, but planners say they will pack the house for the return of favorite son Jody Richards

W.M. Feese, Jr, Adair County chairman for the Richards-Brown campaign for the Democratic nomination for Governor-Lieutenant Governor Kentucky, has announced a rally on Thursday, March 29, 2007, starting at 6pm CT, at the VFW Hall at the Fairgrounds in Columbia, KY.

The site of the rally is only two miles from Speaker Richards' boyhood home on Burton Ridge on KY 206.

Feese, the long serving Adair County PVA, said he is pleased with the enthusiasm shown for Richards in Adair County this year. While he wouldn't name all the Adair County Democratic powers who are working for Richards now, he did say that he's pleased with the big names who are publicly endorsing him this year.

What makes this campaign look particularly rosy in this campaign, Feese says, is that Richards is supported this time by many local Democrats who felt a loyalty to the Chandler family from years past, and supported Ben Chandler in 2003.

This time, the most high profile of the Chandler Democrats, former Adair County Judge Executive Richard L. Walker, is backing Richards, as is Walker's lifetime ally and political mentor, Grover C. Gilpin.

"I think he's going to win this time," Walker said. "We're going to pack the place for him. We're going to show him Adair County is going all out for him."

The prominent Flowers family is backing Richards, as they always have. Joe Flowers, Richards campaign manager in Adair County in 2003, is playing a major role in the campaign again this year.

Feese said that he has heard from many members of the larger Loy family--a traditionally major force in Adair Democratic affairs--and they are backing the Speaker. Feese named a close political ally of his own, Dennis Loy, Adair County Circuit Court Clerk, as a key member of the Loy family who is taking a big hand in the Richards-Brown campaign.

Speaker Jody Richards will be the featured speaker at the March 29 rally. Feese said he is uncertain whether Richards' running mate, John Y. Brown III, will be at the Columbia rally.

"We want all Adair Countians to come out and support a native Adair Countian and a great Kentuckian, Speaker Jody Richards, for governor," Feese said. "Jody was born and raised right here among us," he said. "If he's elected, it will mean so much to the people of Adair County."

Richards is the son of the late Demaree and Mary Stevenson Richards. Demaree was a well-known building contractor who built many of the older structures on the Lindsey Wilson campus, including the President's House, the former library, and what was known, then, as the Faculty House.

His mother, Mary Richards, is remembered as one of the all time great educators in Adair County. Today, former students remember her most as a math teacher, but people in the Knifley area remember her as coach of the Knifley High School basketball team.

"Jody has a real good chance to be elected this time," Feese said, "and we want him to know his home town is behind him."

Richards, an Adair County High School graduate who grew up in Garlin, was narrowly defeated by now U.S. Representative Ben Chandler for the nomination.

Feese said that entertainment will be provided, and that a meal will be served. The entertainment is being arranged, Feese said, as is the menu.

"We'll be announcing more details as we get closer to the rally," Feese said. "For now," he said, "I just want to thank all the Democrats who are telling me they support Richards. Jody has a great shot at this."
