Letter: No flood insurance in Adair County

Flood victims found out they were on their own

To the editor,

For the property owners in or near the "lowlands" of Adair County there is no relief available in the form of flood insurance to protect against loss, it is simply unavailable in a county that does not participate in the National Flood Protection Program.

Up until now there has been little interest in flood insurance. The perception was there were too few affected and a limited potential flood hazard. Maybe that perception should be re-evaluated. As we saw September 23, 2006, when we received 7 inches of rain over a few hours, there was no federal assistance coming in the way of Federal Disaster Area declarations, those who were flooded out then were . . . on there own.
