Cranmer at LWC wins prestigious statewide Blue Plate Award Boone Tavern, Berea College, wins honorable mention By Duane Bonifer, Director of LWC Public Affairs Lindsey Wilson College's Roberta D. Cranmer Dining & Conference Center recently received statewide recognition for something students and area residents have known for a long time: it's one of the best places to eat in Southcentral Kentucky. The dining center received a prestigious Blue Plate award from Prep magazine, a food-industry publication based in Louisville, Ky. Lindsey Wilson received a Blue Plate in the School and Care Facilities Foodservice division. The award -- which is given to the "most notable establishments in the foodservice industry" -- was voted on by industry peers and food suppliers. Published in Kentucky, Ohio and Tennessee, Prep magazine is distributed to more than 30,000 food industry professionals. "We're very proud of this award because this award is usually given to restaurants and food-services operations that are very well-known in the Louisville and Lexington areas," said Jeff Willis, Lindsey Wilson director of business services. "It's quite a thrill to sneak in there and win the award. This shows that we provide a quality product to our students and guests." Since opening in spring 1993, the Cranmer Dining & Conference Center has become a centerpiece of Lindsey Wilson's campus. Today, the dining center serves about 1,600 meals a day to Lindsey Wilson students, and hundreds more to guests. "The secret to this award is the great team of individuals we have on staff," said Willis, who has been involved with the dining center for all but three years since 1986. "They are an outstanding group of individuals who are very mission-driven and always put our students first. This award is a tribute to the hard work of our staff." Center serves as bridge between college, community During its 14-year history, the dining center has also served as a bridge between the college and the community, Willis said. An example is the Sunday brunch, the meal that usually attracts the most guests from Adair County and beyond. "It's always great to have members of the community join us because that helps pull the college and the community closer together," Willis said. "We take a lot of pride in being an asset not just for Lindsey Wilson community but for all of Adair County. ... I have to give a lot of credit to the administration of Lindsey Wilson for allowing us to work with members of the community. There are some colleges that don't welcome outsiders to campus, but Lindsey Wilson is extremely good about working with members of the community." Even when classes are not in session and most students have gone home, the Cranmer Dining & Conference Center remains a busy place. During the summer, for example, the dining center hosts numerous camps, conference, special meetings and wedding parties ranging from five to 500 people. "This is already shaping up to be one of our busiest summers," Willis said. "We have booked numerous camps, weddings, anniversary parties and other special events. That's a reflection of how versatile Cranmer Dining Center is -- we can divide it just about any way." And although Christmas is more than 10 months away, the dining center is almost booked up with Christmas parties for community groups. "The last time I checked we had a couple openings in December," Willis said. "That's such a busy month for us because we are not only serving students, but we also have numerous Christmas parties as well. It makes for a lively month around here."
