Inauguration Day: Sunday, December 31, 2006
Official terms began January 1, 2006
By Ed Waggener
Umbrellas were the order of the day, but steady rains didn't stop a crowd of possibly 200 from attending the induction of new officials in the Big Courtroom at the Adair County Courthouse Sunday afternoon, December 31, 2006.
The event was highlighted by the inauguration of Adair County's first woman judge, of an Adair County native's elevation of District Judge, and by the induction of the Mayor of Columbia to his first full term.
Very brief comments were made by Judge Executive Ann Melton, Columbia Mayor Pat Bell, and Judge Loy.
Judge Melton expressed what is becoming a hallmark of her administration, with a plea of collaborative input, saying, "Please continue to pray for us and share your ideas with us and hopefully, we'll have good years ahead."Mayor Bell expressed appreciation for the turn-out. "I very much appreciate the interest you are showing in our city."
And Judge Loy promised full, fair administration of justice.
In all, 89 officials were scheduled to take part in the ceremonies. A large number of Adair County Regional Jail Deputies were on duty and were to be inducted by Judge Melton at a later date.
Following an invocation by Bro. Raymond Martin, the first to be inaugurated by Circuit Judge James Weddle was Michael Loy as 29th Judicial District Judge.
After Judge Loy completed the oath of office, Ann Melton was formally inducted as Adair County Judge.
Judge Melton completed the rest of the ceremonial duties for the following (names in italics were unable to be present and will be sworn in later):
Mayor of City of Columbia, KY
City of Columbia Council Members
Adair Fiscal Court Members: Magistrates
Adair County Attorney
Adair County Circuit Court Clerk's Office
Adair County Property Valuation Administrator office
Adair County Court Clerk's Office
Adair County Sheriff's Office
Adair County Jailer and Staff
Adair Coroner and Staff
Adair County Surveyor
Adair County Constables
Adair County Board of Education
Refreshments were catered by Paul Miller, courtesy the top 10 elected county officials.
