2006 Relay for Life: A record! "Don't announce anything less than $90,000," Relay Committee told; moment came after preliminary tally had reached $89,500 mark. Watch for more coverage of the Relay of Life Event in ColumbiaMagazine. Also watch for related news on WHVE, WAIN, The Adair Progress, the Community Voice, Channel 13 WBKO (Sat. 10pm) and the Courier-Journal on Wednesday, June 14, 2006. By Ed Waggener It was a night which showed the absolute best of in Adair County known for caring and generosity. While Relay for Life Chair Peggy Lawson announced the triumph, $90,000 was flashed on the screen by Ellen Zornes, the Power Point operator for the night. Earlier in the week, the Relay Committee had hoped for to simply beat the $79,000+ total raised in 2005. Round number total is itself a story The round number was itself a remarkable story. The final figure may go higher, but $90,000 is assured. Immediately before the announcement, committee members were excited that the total had exceeded $89,500. Two of them were wondering if the $90,000 mark might be reached. Bank of Columbia President Robert Flowers overheard and interjected, "Don't announce anything less than $90,000." The two committee members continuing speculation on other sources which would top the magic figure. A car dealer's donation of $350 had yet to be counted, one said. Mr. Flowers broke in, "Do you hear what I'm saying. 'Don't announce anything short of $90,000'." In the excitement of the moment, the committee members still did not get his meaning. 'We'll make up the difference' Finally, Mr. Flowers said directly, "Hear me. Don't announce anything less than $90,000," and explained, "we'll make up the difference." And then they understood that a matter of $500 or less wouldn't stand in the way of making a huge success into a seemingly unattainable milestone record. Preliminary goal of $100,000 announced for next year. When Ms. Lawson announced the figure, she also pointed to an even greater victory next year. "I don't see any reason why we can't raise $100,000 next year," she said. The Relay Team from the First National Bank had the highest total funds raised among other 26 teams this year.
