Planning & Zoning denies change for Pink Flamingo store

To be reminded of important dates, check Events calendar daily
By Ed Waggener

The City of Columbia Planning & Zoning turned down a zone change request for one lot at 110 E. Frazier Avenue, which would have allowed the Pink Flamingo Store to operate in what had been a tiny all residential neighborhood of about six homes sandwiched between Adanta, the Masonic Lodge, and Walker Florist.

The matter will now go to the Columbia City Council for an approve/deny vote.

The next scheduled meeting of the City Council is Monday, July 3, 2006. A majority vote is required to deny the P&Z recommendation, and, on P&Z considerations, Mayor Bell does not have a vote in case of a tie.

Neighbor speaks in favor

The unanimous vote came even though neighbors did not oppose the change, and one Maxine Walker, spoke in favor of allowing the zone change. Mrs. Walker owns the property, and much of the other surrounding property.See Photo 110 E. Frazier ST, Columbia, KY

Neighborhood preservation advocate speaks against zone change

Roy Rademacher, who lives in the Historic Greensburg Street Neighborhood, spoke against the zone change, saying that the zone change would set a precedent for spot zoning. Rademacher was a major presence in the controversial zone change request for 503 Greensburg Street.

Joe Flowers elected chair of board

Acting Chair Joe Flowers was elected at the meeting as permanent chair; Sue Stivers was voted Vice Chair, and Lloyd French was elected secretary.

They were all present, as was member George Kolbenschlag. Member Mary Allender was unable to attend.
