Sunday, May 29, 2006, saw high number of additions to list. We hear from Jim Beard, Virginia Kimbler, Frank Dickerson, Melody Pollard, Brian Melton, Terry Moore, and get an update on the unusual sacrifice of Mike Cooley's family; the list is being continuously edited

By Ed Waggener

The ColumbiaMagazine.com lists of veterans changed a lot this morning, with additions from half a dozen or more contributors. Still, as Joe Hare pointed out, it has a long way to go to be what we would all like it to be.

The day started with a note from my childhood neighbor, Jim Beard, who asked, "Eddie, Do I have to die to get honorable mention?." No, we hope that event is a long, long time off, and added the 22 year veteran to the list.

Classmate sends names of four brothers

An ACHS (1958) classmate of mine, Virginia Kimbler Burkett, sent word from Somerset that her four brothers were not listed. She wrote, "I had four brothers to serve. A.G. Kimbler served in WWII. W.A. Kimbler served two tours in Vietnam James Edward Kimbler served in Korean and John J. Kimbler served in Vietnam. All are now deceased. They may not have been living in Adair when they joined and served but are originally from there." It was good to hear from Mrs. Burkett, who was an outstanding member of that class.

Frank Dickerson sends major revision to list

Frank Dickerson, who lives in San Mateo, CA, but who is forever an Adair Countian, sent a list which made a major revision in the list.

He wrote, "Please Correct name of Hershell WEST to Hershel L. WEST," and added these names to the list:

"Delmer L. Beaty, WWII; James Carlis Beaty, Korea; Wilbert Alton Blair, Vietnam; Charles E. Blair, Vietnam; Robert Brown, WWII;

"George A. Burton; Bushrod R. Davis, Civil War;

"John Dickerson, Korea: Thomas A. Dickerson, Vietnam; Charles Edwin Dickerson, WWII; Walter Fred Dickerson, WWII;

"Ballard Goode, WWII;

"Billy Joe Hagy; WWII George Frank Hagy, WWII;

"James Matthew Martin, WWI; Henry Leslie Martin, WWI; Lowell A. Martin, WWII; Clifton W. Martin, Korea; Oreon H. Martin, Korea;

"William Jessee Neat, Korea;

"John O. Prock, Korea;

"Audy W. Rich, WWII' Dennis E. Rich, WWII; William Stanley Rich, WWII; Robert T. Rich, WWII;

"Daniel W. Sanders, WWII; Benjamin H. Sanders, WWII; Wayne Sanders, WWII; Earnie S. Sapp, WWII; Clisby E. Scott, Vietnam;

"Harold Dean Tedder, Korea;

"Charles Raymond WEST, WWII; Robert Scott WEST, WWII; William Paul West, WWII; Thomas D. WINGLER, Jr., Korea."

The updates have been made, to the best of our ability. If there are errors, we want to know.

Melody Pollard adds name of her father

Melody Pollard added the name of her father, Garold "Gary" Russell, who served in World War II.

Terry Moore gives name which prompts addition of two more

At the Memorial Day service, Terry Moore of Allen Moore & Sons and Edgewoods, reminded me that his Uncle, the late Liston Moore, had served in Asia. He was a driver on the Burma Road, Terry said. It reminded me that one of my all time favorite Adair Countians, T.M. "Buck" Watson, had been a driver in the Red Ball Express in World War II. When I looked, I found that Buck Watson wasn't on the list, nor--and this seems impossible--was Watson's biographer and the man who may be Adair's most famous veterans, author Henry Giles.

Mike Cooley edits the long list of family servicemen

Another change in the list started when we received the update from Mike Cooley on the Cooley family. He sent the names of six of the Cooleys who served in the military. For their numbers, the Cooleys made tremendous sacrifices on the part of Adair County and America, and the idea came to make family break-outs for those with larger numbers. This has been done for part of the list, and the editing is ongoing. Mike Cooley sent this note: "Add CWO Ralph W. Cooley, US Army, ret. WWII, Korea, Vietnam; Charles Michael Cooley, US Army; Charles T. Cooley, US Army; James L. Cooley, US Navy; Change Elmo Cooley, WWII to Joseph Elmo Cooley, US Army; and Junior Cooley, WWII to Ralph W. Cooley Jr. US Air Force ret.p"

Brian Melton sends three names

We heard from Brian Melton, who sent the name of his father, Gary Melton, Vietnam; and his Uncles, Harold Mouser and Robert Brockman, World War II.

Your help with the Adair County, KY, Veterans List is needed

The ColumbiaMagazine.com Adair County, KY, Veterans List has a long way to go, we know. There are some duplications, we know. There are some misspellings, we know. The list is far too short, we know. And the organization can be improved, we know. Linda and I are working to do the updates we understand, but we ask help from family members to point out changes needed, to make additions, and help us, as Joe Hare did, with suggestions for changes which will make the list more meaningful.

We encourage family members to record family military history, stories

It is difficult to read the Veterans List without seeing names which bring tears. We know that every name on the list is a or the major story of America's wars for someone. We hope that family members will take time to listen to the stories of their veterans, even if they are several hands old. And, if you'd care to share the stories, send them to us for inclusion in this project.
