Travel: Pacific Northwest
Some notes from Robert and Tammy's latest travel to National Parks in Washinton and Oregon. We'll be sharing photos from the trip over the next days/weeks.

Our trip to the Pacific Northwest would require a lot of road time (in the end 973 miles). Our itinerary included driving around most of the circumference of Olympic National Park, and spending one day in Mt. Rainier National Park (we would have spent more time in Rainier but part of the park was closed due to fires).
We flew into Portland, Oregon; overnighted and headed out the next morning towards the coastline of Oregon and Washington.
After visiting a couple beaches it was then on to Olympic National Park in Washington. In this park we would drive to Hurricane Ridge, and visit a couple Rain Forests. Ultimately, we would finish the trip in Mt. Rainier National Park in Washington for a day and drive back to Portland to overnight. We flew back to Kentucky the next day.

Travel: Indian Beach, Oregon

Robert writes, "Tammy, the Navigator, had pre-planned us visiting Cannon Beach in Oregon, but after several attempts to actually find the beach and somewhere to park as well as driving through the town a couple of times, we gave up and backtracked to Indian Beach.
It's a beautiful beach with fewer people and a twisty winding road that you have to navigate to get to it. It's well worth it, a hidden gem and probably just as nice, maybe nicer than Cannon Beach."

Travel: A tour of Tillamook Creamery

Robert writes, "A cheese lover's paradise! Around 10 minutes from the ocean, this destination is a must stop if you're in the area. Not just for cheese lovers, ice cream as well, and a self-guided tour inside the plant. Free samples of their cheese (6 year aged sharp cheddar was my favorite). Had our itinerary allowed it, we would have liked to spent more time in the plant. The self guided tour with large viewing windows allowed for observations of every step of the cheese-making process. Sixty dairy farms supply around 45-50 truck loads of milk every day to keep up with the operation.
On the day of our visit, the parking lot was nearly full, with hundreds of tourists pouring in and touring the creamery; of course providing opportunities for some street photography as well!"

Travel: Foraging in Humptulips, Washington

Robert writes, "Always on the lookout for old rusty trucks, these happened to catch my eye, and fortunately there was a pullover at a gas station where I could attempt some photography. Earlier, during our travels, we had picked some wild blackberries that were ripening so Tammy took the opportunity to pick some for breakfast...while I was focused on the old trucks. These berries are similar to the large, domesticated blackberries we grow here in Kentucky, and are seedless and sweet, ripening in late August early September."

Travel: Olympic National Park, Washington (1 of 2)

Robert writes, "This photo is a slice of Quinault Rain Forest. The ever-popular Hoh Rain Forest, elsewhere in the park, has a long wait time to enter. Tammy had researched this one and found most visitors had commented it was just as nice...with no waiting. We both loved the rain forest!"

The climb of 200 feet begins with help from dad

Photographer Robert Ellis and his Navigator, Tammy, recently paid a visit to the world's largest* Sitka Spruce tree, located on Washington's Olympic Peninsula in the Quinault Rainforest at Rain Forest Resort Village. Robert says the little girl on the tree in the photo got stuck and was hollering for an assist from her (nearby) dad.
*The Big Spruce is nearly 200 feet tall, and approximately 1000 years old. According to the Resort's web page, there is some controversy about exactly which Spruce holds the world title, which may explain the vandalism to their sign.

Travel: Ruby Beach, Washington (1 of 3)

Robert writes, "This beach is part of the Olympic National Park, running almost entirely along the left side of the Olympic Peninsula. The main part of the park is centered mostly in the center of the Peninsula.
This small stream posed a dilemma for folks wanting to explore further down the beach (and not wanting to take off their shoes, like me). I had considered crossing at this spot where the lady is jumping across, but ultimately went further upstream to a man-made log crossing. With a natural branch walking stick in one hand and Tammy's in the other I managed to get across while keeping my feet dry."

Travel: The Bridge Builders on Ruby Beach

Robert writes, " After getting an OK from Mom, I snapped this photo of her kids building this bridge. Boy, does this bring back childhood memories.
I would have crossed here, but I think I might have exceeded the weight limit! So I picked a spot further up the creek, where another man is crossing in this photo."

Travel: Discovering color along the beach

Robert writes, "Once I crossed the stream at Ruby Beach, I was able to travel further and explore more of the 'haystacks' at the ocean's edge. Upon my return, while doing a little rockhounding, I happened upon sea foam displaying these colors. The phenomenon was brief, only lasting for a short while.
No doubt, passers-by were wondering what this guy was doing squatted down with his camera taking pictures of what appeared to be nothing but foam. I think I was the only one noticing this 'event'; this is a colorful image of what they were missing!"

Travel: Hurricane Ridge

Robert writes, "The day after visiting Ruby Beach, our plan was to head up to Hurricane Ridge inside Olympic National Park. The goal was to leave the hotel early enough in the morning, to get ahead of the sea fog/clouds that roll in off the ocean. This event tends to obscure most of the view of that mountain range.
Fortunately we were successful in beating the fog, and stopped along the way to pull over and take some photos. In the center of this photo you can see the fog starting to roll in off the ocean; it became a race to the top!"
