Photos from Old Washington, KY By Mike Watson Pen, after seeing your terrific photographs of Old Washington in Mason County, I had to deep dive into some of my research. My wife, Renea, has ancestors in old Mason County and the neighborhood of Old Washington. I have attached one example photo from about twenty years ago taken in the Old Baptist Cemetery in Old Washington. These are from a project I worked on for the Kentucky Genealogical Society's Blue Grass Roots, their quarterly publication, on pre-1800 marked graves in Kentucky. Notice the inscription: "In Memory of Alfred Johnston, who died Nov. the 30th 1796 aged 3 days." This is a slate stone, locally sourced, and was likely carved within a few weeks or months after the death of this infant. Also note the almost total lack of deterioration and damage to a stone that dates back--at the time of the photo--about 210 years! Another item of interest to me--the month and day on the stone--that is also a birthdate (not year) shared with Mike Watson and Samuel L. Clemens!
