Place Names - How Adair churches came to be By Michael C. Watson Adair County Genealogical Society Christianity was and is the prevalent religion in this area. Biblical teaching left its mark on place names, particularly churches here: Zion Church and community. Zion Baptist is the oldest Baptist congregation in the county that survived into the twentieth century. This was the mother church of the Columbia Baptist congregation. Joppa post office and community was just a short distance from Zion. Antioch Church and community near Sparksville. Old Bethel Meeting House near Montpelier. Bethel Methodist near Gradyville. Beulah Chapel Church and community. Hopewell Baptist community and church. Mt. Gilead Christian and Baptist Churches. Shiloh Christian Church celebrated 150 years last year. Shiloh Presbyterian Church merged with the town congregation. Tabernacle Christian Church. Pleasant to be in Adair County: Mt. Pleasant Christian Church, established about 1821. Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. Pleasant Grove Christian Church. Pleasant Hill Christian Church. Pleasant Ridge Methodist Meetin' House. Pleasant View Baptist Church.
