Nominations being accepted for 2006 Excellence in Entrepreneurship Awards

RICHMOND, KY - Eastern Kentucky Universitys College of Business and Technology, Kentucky Highlands Investment Corp. and The Center for Rural Development are seeking nominees for the 2006 Excellence in Entrepreneurship Awards.


An annual award was established in 2001 to honor excellence in entrepreneurship throughout Eastern and Southern Kentucky. Nominees for the four 2006 awards will be accepted through Monday, June 5.

Small companies comprise the engine that drives our economy

Weve seen that small companies comprise the engine that drives most of our economy, said Dr. Robert Rogow, dean of EKUs College of Business and Technology. We want to do whatever we can through our partnership to foster small-business development and recognize those whove been successful in developing companies in Eastern and Southern Kentucky.

2005 recipients of the award were: Steve Keck of Somerset Recycling Services, Somerset; Julian Moss of Moss Flowers, Inc., Lancaster; Lora Jane Hyden of Pointe of Joy Performing Arts, Paintsville; and Tom Fields of Southeastern Kentucky Rehabilitation Industries, Inc., Corbin.

Awards in four categories

Awards will be given in four categories Business, Small Business, Start-ups, and Non-profits and are determined by the economic success of the enterprise, contributions to the community, job creation and operational achievement as measured by innovative business practices, superior safety achievement and superior technology.

Finalists will be honored at a formal luncheon Monday, September 11, 2006

This years finalists and the recipient for each category will be honored at a formal luncheon Monday, September 11, 2006, at The Center for Rural Development headquarters in Somerset. Congressman Hal Rogers will serve as the keynote speaker for the event.Supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses is at the heart of the mission of The Center for Rural Development, said Lonnie Lawson, president and CEO of The Center.

New Excellence in Entrepreneurship Collegiate category

A new addition to the 2006 program will be the announcement of the recipient of the Excellence in Entrepreneurship Collegiate Business Concept Challenge Award. The competition invited business ideas from Eastern and Southern Kentucky university, college, and community college students to compete for cash awards and professional consultation.

The top concepts will have the opportunity to discuss launch strategies for their concepts with entrepreneurs and business professionals. Sponsors for the Challenge are: The Eastern Kentucky University College of Business and Technology, Berea Colleges Entrepreneurship for the Public Good, Kentucky Highlands Investment Corporation, and the Center for Rural Development.

Whether they succeed or fail, their tenacity and adventurous spirit need to be recognized and applauded. Thats what the Excellence in Entrepreneurship Awards is about.
