Bro. David Coffey, 76, Russell County, KY

David Coffey, of Russell Springs, passed away peacefully on Monday, November 17, 2025. He was 76 years of age.

Born on May 18, 1949, in Kenton County, he came home to Russell County in 1951 when he was adopted by the late Hollist and Aleane Coffey. David was a graduate of Russell County High School, Campbellsville College, and Western Kentucky University. He was a retired teacher from the Russell County Board of Education, teaching at Union Chapel Elementary, Russell Springs Elementary and Russell County High School. He enjoyed farming and coaching multiple sports, including football, basketball, baseball, and softball.

However, his true calling in life was service to his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Brother David was ordained as a minister in the South Kentucky Association of Separate Baptists in 1978. He pastored several churches in Russell, Casey, Pulaski, and Adair Counties. His last 28 years of ministry were spent at New Hope Separate Baptist Church in Columbia, before retiring in 2022 due to health issues. David was the truest definition of a pastor. He tirelessly led and cared for the members of his congregation and beyond, driving countless miles to visit the sick, be present for surgeries, births, deaths, funerals, or just to stop and say hello. David made weekly rounds at three nursing homes and regularly visited hospitals all over the state. He leaves a legacy with this dedication and will always be remembered as a good and faithful servant.

David is survived by his devoted wife of almost 58 years, Joyce Conover Coffey, who lovingly cared for him though many health challenges. He is also survived by his children, Dr. Scott (Vicki) Coffey of Fishers, Indiana; Dr. Brian (Angela) Coffey of Manhattan, Kansas; and Drs. Dana (Michael) McReynolds of Lexington, Kentucky, in addition to ten grandchildren: Nathaniel and Megan Coffey; Jadon, Ella, and Cora Coffey; and Piper, Lila, Levi, Easton, and Declan McReynolds. David was proud of his family and loved them dearly. He always encouraged his children and grandchildren in everything they did, placing a great emphasis on education, but above all the importance of faith in Jesus.

Later in his life, David had the opportunity to get to know some of his biological family. He is survived by his brothers, Gary Mitchell, Mark Murray, and Tim Murray.

Visitation will be Saturday November 22, 2025, from 5:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Bernard Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Sunday November 23, at 2:00 PM at Bethlehem Separate Baptist Church, with Bro. Troy Coffey, Bro. Casey Davis, Bro. Ritchie Curtis, and Bro. Bobby Conner officiating. Music will be provided by the Crossroads Quartet. Burial will follow in Bethlehem Cemetery. Visitation before the service will begin at 1:00 PM.

Ralph Burton, Dale Carey, Jimmy D. Coffey, Jeff Neat, Greg Scholl, and Barry Stephens will serve as pallbearers.

In Iieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The American Cancer Society Hope Lodge in Lexington, Kentucky or New Hope Separate Baptist Church in Columbia.
