Friends of WCNFH looking for derby donations

Friends of Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery President Steve Bennett of Russell Springs and Vice President Charmaine Stewart of Columbia asked Columbia Magazine to share a request for support in preparing for the following three fall fishing events:

Event 1: The 12th Annual Wounded Warriors Fishing Event will be held on Wednesday, September 10th, 2025. We will be hosting a group of veterans for a small breakfast and take-a-long snack, then a morning of Striper fishing on Lake Cumberland followed by trout fishing in Hatchery Creek. Participants will receive lunch and a t-shirt.

Event 2: The 16th Annual Catch A Smile Senior Fishing Derby will be held on Tuesday, September 23th, 2025. This event is for anyone 62 years and over. Participants will be treated to lunch, door prizes, and trout fishing in Hatchery Creek.

Event 3: The 16th Annual Reaching for Rainbows Special Needs Kids Fishing Derby will be held on Wednesday, September 24th & Thursday, September 25th, 2025 for special needs students in the area school systems. Participants of this event will have the opportunity to fish in Hatchery Creek, receive lunch, t-shirt, and a medallion.

Major sponsorship is considered $200 or more. If you are a major sponsor, you or your business's name will be printed on the shirts for the Wounded Warriors Fishing Event and for the Reaching for Rainbows Fishing Derby. Also, as a major sponsor your name will be on a large banner displayed at the event. You will also receive a certificate of appreciation and you or your business will be in all press releases that recognize our sponsors.

Thanks to sponsors these events have remained free and brought joy to many participants over the years.

Friends of Wolf Creek NFH, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) organization, which makes all donations received, tax deductible. Your donations may be used for many aspects of the derbies, such as purchasing prizes, medallions, food, equipment rentals, and for improving facilities and infrastructure as needed to conduct the events. All donations, large or small, greatly contribute to the continued success of these events.

Completed in 1975, this hatchery was established to mitigate for habitat changes that resulted from the construction of many federal dams throughout the Southeast.

Native populations of warm water fishes such as bluegill, smallmouth bass, and catfish, used to thrive in these streams. After construction of the dams, the habitat was changed to a cold water fishery.

This hatchery raises over 1,000,000 brook trout, brown trout, cutthroat trout, and rainbow trout each year, which thrive in cold water.

Our efforts also support State and Tribal programs. Fish from here are stocked in over 120 public fishing waters in Kentucky.

All trout stocked in Kentucky come from this facility. To assist in meeting agency goals, any fish surplus to Kentucky's needs are stocked in Tennessee, North Carolina, and Georgia.

Fish produced here provide a $50 million dollar boost to the national economy eich year.

Just one of many displays in the Wolf Creek National Fish Hatchery welcome area. Volunteers are always welcome to help host visitors. This display says, "Lake Cumberland stretches 100 miles behind the Wolf Creek Dam. The result of Lake Cumberland being formed was the addition of 55,000 acres of newly formed water. Lake Cumberland consists of 3 layers of water behind the dam. The top layer is the Flood Control Pool. The second layer is the Power Pool. The third and final layer is the Conservation Pool."
