Bobby Bowe featured in CU Alumni Spotlight Bobby Bowe of the Flatwoods community in Adair County was selected for the Alumni Spotlight feature in the recent issue of the Campbellsville University Magazine. By Brandon Roberts, Campbellsville University staff writer In 2008, two-time Campbellsville University Alumni, Bobby Bowe received the call from God to preach the Gospel to all who would hear him, and he has been fulfilling that role ever since. "I tried to avoid it at first," said Bowe. "I knew what it was, and I decided to accept the call." Out of his successful career, Bowe described his choice to become a pastor as "the best move I ever made." With a readiness to preach the Gospel, Bowe wanted to learn as much as he could and pursued a master's in theology with CU so he could better answer God's call. "When I first walked in the classroom, Dr. Hurtgen said, 'Forget what your mama taught you. We are here to teach you the Bible,'" said Bowe with a grin. "Campbellsville took a special interest in me. The professors told me, 'Hey, you can do this, and we will work through it.' That's why I support CU, because CU supported me, they wanted me to succeed." Bowe was able to graduate with a deeper theological understanding and a readiness to teach the gospel. It was not long after, Bowe began to preach around Kentucky and even became the head pastor of different communities like Pleasant Grove Baptist Church and Liberty Baptist Church in Burkesville, Ky. He also diligently serves in his local Emmaus community. "It has been an amazing journey for me," said Bowe when reflecting on all his life experience that led him up to this point. Born just a few miles away from the university in Columbia, Ky, Bowe resonated with students in need when looking back on his own childhood. Bowe lived with his loving father and mother as well as nine other brothers and sisters. "I had a very close-knit and loving family growing up, and we did what we had to make it. We had to walk to grade school because they were just starting to be integrated. I encountered a lot of things like that, and it was not easy," said Bowe. Bowe added, "It was terrible, being born before schools were integrated. Racism was rampant, restaurants, movie theaters, a lot of establishments we couldn't go to." Still, the Bowe family persevered when it mattered most. "If there's a will, there's a way, and our family focused on that," said Bowe. After his schooling was finished, Bowe went to serve in the United States Army until he was 23. After this, he gained as much experience in and out of the classroom as possible. At the age of 32, he earned his bachelor's in social work as part of the Campbellsville University class of 1981. Bowe went on to work for several agencies over the years, including the Cumberland Action Agency, Lake Cumberland Area Development District and worked as a park superintendent in Colorado, Kentucky and several other areas. In 2002, Bowe also worked in Frankfort, Ky, in the finance cabinet. Bowe held these jobs while also being an entrepreneur for himself and started several businesses. These included a pool hall in the 70s located in downtown Columbia, Ky., and a dry-cleaning business. Even with this tall resume, "It didn't satisfy my appetite," said Bowe, and he went on to start Bowe Rental Properties. After much hard work, Bowe was able to retire in 2013 where he could focus on God's call for his life. The call to preach came in 2008 and just a few years later Bowe received his ordination in 2013 as a Baptist pastor. Bowe earned a lot of encouragement to answer such a call from his late wife, Euline. Bowe said, "She was really happy for me. She told me, 'I knew it was coming!' The Lord really started to work on me after that, and I found myself preaching a lot to myself. I preached pretty much all over the state of Kentucky in various churches." While Bowe continues to preach around the state, he serves as the assistant pastor for Santa Fe Baptist Church, located just outside Columbia, Ky. After all his success and devotion, Bowe continues to give back to CU. He has served as an Alumni Board member for nearly 14 years. "I increased my giving because I think the University is on a great mission," Bowe stated. "I grew up without a lot of support, so when I heard students needed funds for scholarships and books, I put my giving towards those who can't afford them." Even now, Bowe emphasized the consistent support that CU has given him and to students since its creation. "The mission at CU is the same, providing a Christian education and providing a means to help the students if they really want it," he said. This story was posted on 2025-09-02 23:37:57
