Carol Perkins: Ladies Day Out

Previous Column: The Homecoming Court

By Carol Perkins

Friday is Ladies' Lunch Day. The number varies from twelve to seventeen, and the locations range from local to out-of-town.

Wherever we go, we are the loudest in the room. However, when the food arrives and the poor server finally gets an answer when she says, "Who got the catfish with green beans and apples?" we stop talking.

Ordering is always worth a submission to America's Funniest Home Videos.

"What did you order?" one of them says to the lady sitting beside her before placing her order.

"I'll have what she ordered, but I don't want green beans; I'll take slaw and bring me a side order of potato salad."

When the orders come from the kitchen, usually two at a time, some stare like a deer in headlights, not remembering what they ordered, as the server calls out what she has in each hand.

"Who got the catfish with slaw and potato salad on the side?" No one answers. Finally, someone will point to the one who ordered it.

"Oh, is that mine?" she'll say. "I forgot what I ordered."

The server stands with a look on her face that says, "Old People."

Among the ladies, there are several pairs of hearing aids. We have knee replacements, hip replacements, and recent falls to discuss. We catch up on the events of the week since we last saw each other on Sunday. Not much ever happens. Sometimes we go over recent obituaries.

One of our favorite places out of town is Rex's in Nancy, KY. We learned about it from Kentucky Living magazine.

Up the road from Rex's is Haney's Orchard and Cafe. We have also eaten there and brought home sacks of apples and fried pies. Another delicious find was Nannie Joe's in Fountain Run and Annie's in Glasgow.

We enjoy trying out new places, but eating locally is also fun because we know almost everyone who comes through the door.

"Anyone want dessert?" the server says, hoping no one will respond so she doesn't have to say, "Who ordered the butterscotch pie?" while we all look at each other.

I am blessed to have such a fun group to share a table with every Friday.
