Basketball: Indians in day 3 of Lindsey Wilson Shootout

By Trey Stephens, Staff Writer

In their first Thursday game of the Lindsey Wilson Shootout, the Adair County Indians Boys Varsity Basketball team fell 52-46 to the Wayne County Cardinals, but they bounced back for their second game to defeat the Harlan County Black Bears 54-45. Adair County is 3-1 in Varsity matchups so far in the Lindsey Wilson Shootout, with wins against Thomas Nelson, Green County, and Harlan County.

The Indians will return to the court on Friday, June 13, 2025, in the third and final day of the tournament, facing likely their hardest day of competition. The Indians have varsity matchups against Caverna at 1pmCT and Bowling Green at 3pmCT, both of which will be played on Wellness Court 1 in the Holloway Health & Wellness Center, 399 Williams St., Columbia, KY.

Adair County will also play a freshman game against Allen County Scottsville at 11amCT on Wellness Court 1, and a JV matchup against Bowling Green at 4pmCT today on Wellness Court 2. If you have the chance, come over to Lindsey Wilson and cheer on your Indians today! Admission to the Lindsey Wilson Shootout is $10, payable at the door in cash, card, and Venmo, and one ticket gets entrance to all games today.

The Colonels come to the tournament off a 17-13 season that ended at the hands of Adair County in the region semifinals, and they are expected to return five of their six largest scorers from last season. In total, the Colonels should return 76% of their scoring from last season and they are also rumored to be adding two very solid players transferring in from other schools. The Colonels have a new head man on the sideline, previous two-time 5th Region Champion Richard Gatewood, who was most recently an assistant at Campbellsville University.

All in all, once the season begins, Caverna is widely expected to be a favorite in the 5th Region. As of mid-June, the Caverna team that appears on the court today may be a long way off from what will appear on the court in late November or early December when season does start. Caverna have won close games against Somerset and Southwestern so far in the Lindsey Wilson Shootout.

The Indians second Friday opponent, Bowling Green, was last year's state runner up. The Purples lost almost as much to graduation as a team possibly can, seeing some combined 69 points per game graduate, which equated to 92% of the scoring, so needless to say Bowling Green has some major holes to fill.

However, it has been since 2013 that a Bowling Green team ended the season with less than 20 wins, and in that same time they have posted some six region titles and one state title. So, even though on paper Bowling Green should be a very inexperienced roster, it is hard to believe they will be anywhere near a weak team. With all of that being said, the Indians should expect two very difficult games today as summer ball rolls on.

Indians fall to Wayne County Cardinals 52-46

The Indians trailed Wayne County by four at the half, and were just unable to do enough to beat a Wayne County team that returns all scoring from last season.

The Indians were led in scoring by Samuel Feese with 14, followed by Dawson Gilbert and Landon Blakey both with 12. The Tribe was unable to put together consistent scoring and struggled once again with stamina, especially in the latter portions of the game, both of which enabled Wayne County to walk away with the victory.

Indians defeat Harlan County Black Bears 54-45

In their second Thursday game of the Lindsey Wilson Shootout, the Adair County Indians defeated the Harlan County Black Bears 54-45. Despite trailing early, the Indians were able to build a lead of 16 at the half. The two teams kept battling, with the Black Bears refusing to go away, but ultimately the Indians proved too much for Harlan County to handle.

Leading scorers for the Indians were Dawson Gilbert with 15, along with John Shehan and Landon Blakey with 12 each. Adair County had a 3-point focused offense in the first half, accruing some 27 of their 36 first half points from beyond the three point arc, but then failed to make a single three point basket in the entirety of the second half. That being the case, you can certainly see that Adair County is experimenting with offenses and figuring out what shots they do and do not want to take, which is exactly what summer ball is good for.
