Carol Perkins: Help me make it through the night

Previous Column: Blindsided

By Carol Perkins

I sometimes avoid going to bed because of my dreams. They are never good ones that make me feel better when I get up. Instead, I can't shake them. Most involve people who have passed. We are always looking for something or in a rush to get somewhere. If there were a pill to stop dreams, I'd order a truckload.

Focusing on the past has never been part of my make-up, yet these dreams bring the past to me. Maybe there is something I need to correct, but with a wagon bed of the dead? If I could find a counselor to unload my dreams on, I would hire him/her. I have been avoiding eating, drinking, and watching anything mind-boggling before I go to bed, but nothing helps. If I were like Guy, I would never dream. What a blessing.

Not only do I avoid going to bed, but I also postpone getting up/staying up.

By seven, I have my first cup of coffee. Back to bed until nine. That is certainly different from those early hours when I was at school by 7:15. If school had begun around 10 and ended at 5, I would have been more alert!

When I was a teenager (or before), I could sleep all day on Saturday and never wanted to get up, so that is why I understand when my teenage grandsons are still in bed at noon on Saturday. "Let them sleep," is my motto.

At slumber parties, I wanted to go to sleep before everyone else, but I knew if I did, I might end up with toothpaste in my hair.

On the other hand, Guy has always risen early and finds my habits odd. "If you'd go to bed at a decent hour, you might sleep."

When I relay my dreams, his tune changes to, "No wonder you don't want to go to bed." Your mind is just weird." I know that!

The purpose of exposing my "sleep problems" is to see how many of you have the same situation. Do you avoid going to bed? Too often dream about those who have passed? Dread getting up? I know I should be glad to see a new day, which we all take for granted, but sometimes putting that first foot on the floor is painful.
