Carol Perkins: I wonder Previous Column: Storms and feather beds By Carol Perkins I wonder what it would feel like to stand on a wave and ride it to the shore. I will never know. I wonder what shrimp or oysters taste like, but I will never know. The thought gags me. I wonder what it would be like to hike down the Grand Canyon or ride down on a donkey, but I will never know. I wonder what paddle boating or kayaking on Barren River would be like, but I will never know. I wonder what riding the waves on a whitewater rafting excursion would do for me, but I would never take that chance. I wonder what the thrill of a roller coaster would be like, but I would never have the nerve. I wonder what rock climbing and reaching the top, zip lining, or swimming under a waterfall would be like, but I would try none of those. I wonder if I have the stamina to run a marathon or take part in a 4K run. I won't ever know. I wonder what it would be like to do a cold plunge, but my heart might not survive so that I won't try. I wonder if I would enjoy exploring a cave, skydiving, or riding to the top of the ARC in St. Louis. I won't do any of these. I wonder what it would be like to smoke pot. I'm too old and too afraid to try. (I can see eyebrows raising now!) As I get older, I wonder what adventures I have missed in life that could have given me a thrill. A joy ride. An adventure. However, the only two "out of the box" things I've done did not turn out too well. Parasailing and snow skiing. I'm sticking to the safe side of life, but I do wonder.
