COLUMBIA, KY - Oscar Juma was part of a national championship earlier this school year as a freshman defender on Lindsey Wilson College's men's soccer team.

And on Wednesday, Juma became a campus champion of a different sort when he won the annual chicken wing-eating contest.

Juma one of 12 to compete

Juma was one of 12 Lindsey Wilson students who competed in the contest, which was part of the college's annual food show in Roberta D. Cranmer Dining & Conference Center. The contest was sponsored by The Dunn Group and IH Marketing, two food brokers of Louisville KY.

Juma, a business administration major from Nairobi, Kenya, won the contest by eating 35 chicken wings in three minutes -- an average of one wing every 5.1 seconds. For his gastronomical feat, Juma received $50 from the college and got to keep the tin bucket he used to collect used his wings.

Show features eight food brokers

Lindsey Wilson's annual food show featured a total of eight food brokers, who represented more than 500 food vendors. The show is used to help shape the menu for the 2006-07 school year, according to Director of Auxiliary Services Jeff Willis.

"The purpose of the day is to give our students, faculty, staff and guests of the college to sample the food and tell us what they'd like to have on the menu next school year," Willis said. "This event allows them to help shape our menu each school year."

The Cranmer staff received about two helpful suggestions from each vendor, Willis said.
