Carol Perkins: On the Road Again

Previous Column: Trying to leave

By Carol Perkins

Six ladies flew from Louisville, went on a cruise out of Port Canaveral, and returned to the Orlando airport eight days later for a flight home.

We arrived early only to learn our 2 PM flight had been delayed two hours. We groaned, but what could we do? Some read, some slept sitting up, and some talked to fellow sufferers.

A later update announced another two-hour flight delay. I had been in this situation before and feared the worst. The worst happened.

The airline canceled our flight.

Initially, maintenance was the problem, but the airline changed the reason to the weather. The "storm" that had not hindered other flights gave Southwest an excuse not to give hotel rooms or food vouchers. All 130-plus disgruntled passengers formed a long, slow-moving line to rebook a flight.

When we finally reached the rebooking desk, there was no flight until 8:30 the following night, and five of us would be on one flight and one on another. That wouldn't work.

Finally, after tossing out every airport name within a hundred miles, we could get a flight to Indianapolis at 7:30 the next morning. That meant someone would have to pick us up and take us to the Louisville airport to get our luggage and car.

We huddled and debated. Consensus agreed to rent a van and drive from Orlando home.

We stopped in Perry, GA, for the night, and the manager of the Holiday Inn Express supplied us with toothbrushes, toothpaste, and deodorant.

The next morning, we were a motley-looking crew with bags under our eyes, no luggage, and no makeup.

As we sailed down the interstate as if we were teenagers headed for Spring Break, I heard from the back of the van, "Are we having fun yet?"

"Yes!" we replied.

She said, "On a scale of 1-10, where are we?"

We all shouted, "TEN."

Then we looked for the nearest DQ and had a blizzard!

Fortunately, our luggage arrived in Louisville ahead of us, and we dragged the pieces to the parking garage and headed home, listening to the Barren County/Clinton County ballgame. Another adventure for the books.
