Carol Perkins: Trying to leave

Previous Column: The Recipe

By Carol Perkins

Two nights before my trip, my CPAC machine quit. It wouldn't come on. I rushed to the medical supply center on Thursday morning, left it for repair, and went back near closing, but it was kerplunk.

What to do? I couldn't get a replacement because I hadn't seen my doctor for three years!

So, I embarrassedly called Dr. Amy's office; by then, it was a little past closing, and I was fortunate someone answered. I explained the situation, and she tried to help.

In a few minutes, the lady gave me the best news. Dr. Amy was still in the office and would make a telehealth call. By five, she had sent in the order.

I went to pick it up Friday morning before leaving for the airport.

When I arrived, the therapist said, "We're having a tornado drill, and I can't help you until it's over, but you'll have to come with me to the back."

Guy was waiting in the truck, which I shouldn't have mentioned to her because she was supposed to bring him in, too.

I said, "Please don't."

She didn't.

We waited through the drill, and she showed me how to use my new machine.

I was home an hour before the time to leave. Then, when I got that settled, I couldn't find my credit card, which I had stuck in my passport.

Went through every purse, the luggage, and finally, between the seats on the couch. Evidently, it had fallen out of one of my trial purses, and there it was.

"If I don't get out the door, I may not leave," I told Guy.

He said, "Did you get your hearing aid?" (I've lost one of them.)

I said, "Huh?"

We both had a laugh.
