Donations being collected for Jimmy's former town

The Columbia/Adair County School Resource Officers are conducting a drive for the Johnson County Schools in Mountain City, Tennessee. They are taking socks, gloves/mittens, beanies/hats, blankets, sleeping bags, and cleaning supplies.

Adair Coujty Middle School SRO Jimmy Luttrell said, "I lived in that town and went to middle school there." He also feels the town is much like Columbia, both small, Appalachian towns with similar populations.

A trailer is located in the parking lot behind Columbia City Hall for donations. It will be available from 6:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m.

Donations will be accepted through October 29 and will be delivered on October 30.

Luttrell shared that Mountain City, TN, sits in a valley between two mountain ranges. When Hurricane Helene hit, water from both sides traveled down into Mountain City.

Like many areas of eastern Tennessee and western North Carolina, roads were washed out, phone lines down, and electricity out. Smaller outer communities completely washed away. Main roads from nearer cities were not passable.

It has been hard getting supplies delivered. With winter coming on, items needed are gloves, beanies, blankets, sleeping bags, etc. Anything to keep warm. Also cleaning supplies.

Plans are to try to open school on Wednesday, November 6, so it would be wonderful for them to have items to hand out to the students that are able to make it to school.

For questions, call the City of Columbia 270-384-2501.
