History brought to life in 2024 Silent City The chilly 50-degree October evening for the Silent City walk from the Adair County Public Library and Genealogy Center to the historic Columbia Cemetery was a joy in itself even before the actors began. Along the way, a few leaves crunched underfoot and there was a smell of wood smoke in the air as around 40 people made the traditional walk. More than that number were already at the cemetery, having skipped the walk and driven to the event. For over 15 tears, the event has been bringing Adair County characters who are buried there to life. Actors dress in period attire and research the life of the person they portray. The 2024 actors were: Richard Phelps - J.B. "Buck" Barbee, mail carrier, inn-keeper, and moonshine smuggler; Lee Ann Jessee - Georgia Reed Shelton, who taught in one room schools in Adair County and became the first female superintendent of Adair County; Ellen and JD Zornes - Martha Morrison and her husband Dr. Nathan Gaither who was a United States Representative and early volunteer to take the smallpox vaccine; Dave Thomas - Marshall H. Marcum, hotel owner and businessman; and Mike Watson - John N. Page (druggist). We'll have photos and history about each as the performers have time to share their notes.
