Writer looks at what LCDHD has to offer

By Samantha C. Sinclair

Your local health department is more vital than you may realize. They offer multiple services, programs, and your privacy is of their top priority.

Let's take a look at what the Adair County Health Department in Columbia offers, starting with The Kentucky Health Access Nurturing development services, better known as HANDS, a voluntary program to assist pregnant and new parents.

The goal of the program is to help parents be the best they can be for their little ones.

Maybe you are wanting some confidential help with family planning and or prevention. This service is offered to males, females, and teens alike. Let's take a look. So what services can a local health department provide if I'm trying to start a family?

Family planning promotes pre reproductive health. This includes a history examination. They can also provide help with planning and spacing out births of children. Other helpful services include preconception counseling, pregnancy testing, along with infertility services.

Also note if you have concerns, they provide services for STD and PAP testing. So, what if you're needing help with not starting a family? Abstinence is one possibility. Other options? The health department provide condoms for both men and women, the sex education program is also provided.

Emergency contraception, as well as provision of birth control for male and female, including sterilization.

To see a list of all options visit LCDHD.org. Immunizations are also provided by the health department. For a full list of these visit their website. You can also visit the CDC to learn more about the schedule on which vaccine should be given.

Staying on schedule is very important for your child so they get the best possible outcome from the vaccine. Also, if your child is not up-to-date on their vaccines, according to the law, they cannot attend public school systems. immunizations are given by appointments at all 10 Lake Cumberland health department District locations.

There is also a recovery program provided to drug addicts. There is once a month meeting and the health department also provides a needle exchange program.

You can visit the health department website, or contact your local lake Cumberland health district to learn more. One thing that may not be thought about as often anymore is lead poisoning. The health department does provide screening for this. It can be very damaging to anyone, but especially in young children. This can cause quite a bit of damage.
