Senator Vernie McGaha receives award for support of technical education FRANKFORT, Ky. (Jan. 31, 2006)- State Senator Vernie McGaha, the son of Schuyler and Barbara McGaha of Columbia, KY, was awarded the KY Tech Executive Director's Partnership Award during a ceremony held January18, 2006, at the General Butler State Park in Carrollton. The award was established to recognize successful alliances betweenthe Office of Career and Technical Education (OCTE) and a business,government entity, nonprofit/voluntary organization and/or an individualthat can act as an example to others and demonstrates creative, sustainablesolutions that meet community needs and build capacity; active involvementof both partners in the design and implementation of the project or program;and a measurable benefit. Senator McGaha, a former educator, is vice-chairman of the SenateAgricultural and Natural Resources Committee and the Education Committee.He is also a member of the Appropriations and Revenue Committee andVeterans, Military Affairs and Public Protection Committee. OCTE Executive Director Emil Jezik spoke of the senator'sunparalleled support of vocational-technical education. "Senator McGaha has tirelessly supported our technical education "Senator McGaha has tirelessly supported our technical educationsystem in various ways throughout the years," said Jezik. "As co-chair ofthe sub-committee on vocational-technical education, he brought to theforefront the importance of our technology centers and type of curriculumthey bring to students across the state. "He has also shown great support of our state's student organizations byspeaking at their many leadership and competitive conferences, including theStudent Organization Leadership Day held annually in Frankfort, " saidJezik. OCTE is an agency of the Education Cabinet's Department forWorkforce Investment. OCTE administers 53 area technology centers, which aresecondary schools that offer students hands-on training in business,graphics, construction, manufacturing, automotive and information technologyfields and health and human services. The Kentucky Education Cabinet coordinates learning programsfrom P-16, and manages and supports training and employment functions in theDepartment for Workforce Investment.
