COLUMBIA, Ky. NOVEMBER 28, 2005-- The national champion Lindsey Wilson College men's soccer team returned to Adair County last Wednesday afternoon with spoils from the 47th Annual NAIA Men's Soccer National Championship and to a crowd of cheering supporters in the college's Cralle Student Union Building.

"You all went out and took care of business, and you never lost your focus," said coach Ray Wells, who won his seventh NAIA national title in 11 years and is now 317-46-19 in 16 years at LWC.

The Blue Raiders won the 2005 NAIA national championship last Tuesday night in Daytona Beach, Fla., with a dominating 4-1 victory over Azusa Pacific (Calif.) University. LWC, who was the 20-team tournament's No. 2 seed, finished the season with a record of 23-1-0. Azusa finished the season 20-5-0.

LWC also won the national championship in 1995, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000 and 2001.

In their four national tournament games, the Blue Raiders outscored their opponents 12-3 and outshot the opposition 74-31. For the season, LWC outscored their opponents 104-11 and outshot their foes 454-134.

In Tuesday night's title match, the Blue Raiders dominated much of the match. LWC controlled the offensive play in the opening 45 minutes, outshooting the Cougars, who were making their first appearance in the national finals, 8-1.

As was the case in the Blue Raiders' semifinal win over Southern Nazarene (Okla.) University, LWC used its depth for the match's first score. Sophomore Tiyiselan Shipalane and freshmen Nathaniel Jafta and Vuyasani Nyandeni entered the match at the 29:53 mark. Two minutes later, Shipalane finished off a deflection in the penalty box to give the Blue Raiders a 1-0 lead.

The Blue Raiders's relentless attack paid off again near the end of the first half. Senior Fausy Rodriquez crossed the ball from about 40 yards out to the far post where sophomore defender Serginho Sandy headed in his second goal of the season at the 43:02 mark to give LWC a 2-0 halftime lead.

"Serginho's goal was the key goal of the match"

"Serginho's goal was the key goal of the match," said Wells, who is 7-0 in NAIA title matches. "It gave us the momentum heading into the break and it seemed to deflate their (Azusa) spirits."

The Blue Raiders carried that momentum into the opening minutes of the second half.

Nyandeni keyed the Blue Raiders' third goal of the match by dribbling the ball down the left flank to the end line. Nyandeni played the ball just behind a streaking forward Mkhokheli Dube, who the Azusa defense keyed on during his run, to the second runner, sophomore midfielder Scott Blandford. Blandford fired the ball into the upper left corner of the goal for the 3-0 lead. Blandford's goal, at the 50:05 mark, was his fifth goal of the season.

Azusa Pacific turned the tables on the Blue Raiders over the next 15 minutes, out-shooting Lindsey Wilson 3-1 during the span. The Cougars used one of their three shots to score their final goal of the season.

"I thought we let down just slightly and Azusa did a great job of taking advantage of that," Wells said. "But our guys quickly regained their poise and finished the match the way we have all season long."

Finishing the match's scoring was Dube as he connected on his 22nd of the season at the 71:42 mark. Jafta and Shipalane combined on the assist to give the Blue Raiders the 4-1 lead and eventually the win.

7th National Championship in 13 national tournament appearances

The national championship was the Blue Raiders' seventh in 13 national tournament appearances and the first since 2001.

Some observers at the NAIA national tournament said the 2005 Blue Raiders were among the best teams to have played in the tournament's 47-year history.

"It's always hard to compare one team to another -- especially teams that have won national championships -- but this definitely was one of the best teams I've coached," Wells said after Wednesday's ceremony. "They never lost sight of what the season was about and what our ultimate goal was, but at the same time they never looked beyond the game at hand."

Wells noted that this year's LWC team was an example of what can be accomplished when people of different races, cultures, religions and countries work together.

Junior midfielder Eduardo Cinel of Brazil, Dube of Zimbabwe, senior midfielder Brian Ombiji of Kenya and Rodriquez of Honduras, were all named to the all-tournament team. Ombiji was also named tournament Most Valuable Player.

Ombiji and sophomore defender Bonivenger Misiko of Kenya were named first-team All- Americans, and sophomore defender Thubelihle Nkomazana of Zimbabwe and sophomore forward Ryan Stewart of Trinidad were named to the third team.

"This group came together as a single unit and showed what can be done when you work together," he said. "It's also an example of how great things can happen at small colleges. This national title is not just for our program -- it's for our college and for the citizens of Columbia and Adair County because that's who we represent every time we step onto the field."
