COLUMBIA, Ky. -- Lindsey Wilson College has created the School of Professional Counseling.

The school -- which includes the college's human services and counseling undergraduate program and counseling and human development graduate program -- is also the only one of its kind in the nation, according to college officials. It is also the first separate school in the college's 102-year history.

"The creation of the School of Professional Counseling is a sign of Lindsey Wilson's commitment to mental-health counselor education, especially to under-served communities in our state," said Lindsey Wilson President William T. Luckey Jr. "In forming the school, the Lindsey Wilson Board of Trustees also wanted to make a statement about one of our college's flagship programs. Our undergraduate and graduate programs in human services are among the best in the nation, and this school gives them an official place to call 'home' within the college."

School of Professional Counseling offers Master of Education degree

Lindsey Wilson's School of Professional Counseling offers a master of education degree in counseling and human development that specializes in community mental-health counseling and also a bachelor of arts degree in human services and counseling.

The graduate program is accredited by the Council for Accreditation of Counseling and Related Educational Programs, the accreditation arm of the American Counseling Association. The graduate program has been cited by CACREP as a model small-college graduate program in the United States.

"The commitment of the School of Professional Counseling is to provide practitioner-based programs known for their by academic integrity, professional competence and sound ethical practice," Luckey said.

More than 550 Lindsey Wilson students are enrolled in the School of Professional Counseling. In addition to the Columbia campus, the School of Professional Counseling also offers classes at the college's Scottsville Campus and through a collaborative agreement with the Kentucky Community & Technical College System at locations in Ashland, Cumberland, Hazard, London, Maysville, Prestonsburg and Somerset.

By enrolling in the School of Professional Counseling, associate-degree graduates from KCTCS can earn a bachelor's degree in human services and counseling or a master's degree in counseling and human development. Students who earn a master's degree are eligible for the credential of "Licensed Professional Counselor" in Kentucky.
