Cyrus: Adair Countian Meets Royalty!

Central Ohio Bureau chief brings to memory one of Adair County's most illustrious sons, General Barksdale Hamlett, whose family was so influential here through most of the 20th Century

American Officers
Meet Princess Elizabeth

Col. Barksdale Hamlett, who spent the early part of this week in Columbia with his mother, Mrs. Barksdale Hamlett, en route to Fort Sill, Okla., had just returned from a two weeks stay in England, where he and three other U.S. Army officers were sent on official business for the Department of the Army.

Among other interesting experiences the four Americans were taken to St. James Palace one afternoon to view Princess Elizabeth's wedding presents which are valued at over two millions, and about which much has appeared in the press.

It happened that the Princess and her lady-in-waiting, Lady Margaret Leymour, were in the palace selecting some gifts to be moved to her home when the Americans arrived. Upon being notified of their presence Princess Elizabeth expressed a desire to meet the U.S. Officers and they were presented to her, an opportunity accorded few visitors . . .

End of article.

Col. Hamlett was graduated from CHS and attended Lindsey Wilson for a year before receiving a West Point appointment in 1926. He served honorably and well in World War II, eventually rose to the rank of General, became president of Norwich College several years later -- and quite possibly is the only Adair Countian ever to meet the (future) Queen of England.

Gen. Hamlett did a wonderful taped interview in '76; the transcription is long but worth the read., particularly the first several pages when he talks about his days in Adair County.
