Baseball: LWC drops a pair to Tennessee Southern

Pulaski, TN - The Lindsey Wilson baseball team dropped a pair of offensive slugfests to Tennessee Southern on Sunday. The first game saw both teams combine for 27 runs and 27 hits while the second game featured a combined 29 runs and 32 hits.

Lindsey Wilson returns to action on Wednesday, March 29, 2023, for a midweek road contest with Indiana Southeast.

Game One | Lindsey Wilson 10, Tennessee Southern 17
The first game of the doubleheader started off back-and-forth with three lead changes and four ties in the first four innings. The Firehawks outscored the Blue Raiders 7-1 in the final three innings to secure the 17-10 victory.

The Blue Raiders jumped out to an early 4-0 lead as Henry Paulino hit an RBI-single, Jonathan Gallagher earned an RBI-hit-by-pitch, and Austin Rayno hit a two-run single in the first inning. The Firehawks responded with a bases-clearing double to cut the deficit to just one at the end of the first frame.

Chance Stayton scored on an error in the top of the second, but Tennessee Southern scored four in the bottom half of the inning to take a 7-5 lead.

The Blue Raiders wasted no time regaining the lead in the third inning, as Jaden Cockerel hit a two-run single to start things off and Stayton earned an RBI-groundout to give the Blue Raiders the 8-7 advantage.

After UTS plated two runs, Michael Sizemore hit a sac-fly in the fourth inning, to score Jordan Blick and tie the game at nine.

An RBI-groundout in the fourth put UTS back in front for good.

The only other run for Lindsey Wilson came in the sixth, as a wild pitch scored Blick.

Four pitchers totaled seven strikeouts for the Blue Raiders.

Game Two | Lindsey Wilson 12, Tennessee Southern 17
After falling behind by six runs, the top of the seventh inning proved to be huge for Lindsey Wilson as Sam Gage hit a three-run home run and Stayton followed that up with a two-run home run, cutting the deficit to just one. The Blue Raiders could not plate another run and the Firehawks scored four in the last two innings to secure the 17-12 victory.

UTS struck first in this game as the Firehawks scored three runs in the first and added one in the third.

Lindsey Wilson finally found life in the fourth inning as the bases were loaded with no outs. Sizemore hit an RBI-single to score Stayton, but a fielder's choice and a double play would not allow any other runs to score. The Firehawks responded with two runs in the bottom half of the fourth.

The Blue Raiders were able to capitalize in the fifth inning, as Andres Duran hit an RBI-double and Lucas Bault hit a two-run single to cut the UTS lead to 6-4. The Firehawks would respond once again, putting up a five-spot in the bottom half of the inning.

Starting pitcher Jonathan Phipps earned five strikeouts in four innings of work.

The Blue Raiders put up its second consecutive three-run inning in the sixth, as Gabe Board, Blick, and Stayton earned RBIs.
