Veterans Day 2005: Breakfast draws over 250 to Wal-Mart

A crowd of over 250 were on hand to celebrate Veterans Day at a breakfast sponsored by the Columbia Wal-Mart Store, hosted by Manager Danny Bragg, and supported by several Columbia businesses.


Over 115 veterans and a few guests registered. The list follows:

Merchandise shelving and racks had been moved to set up a temporary stage and a dining room with tables and seats for 240 people, with each table decorated with flags. The Adair County High School Cheerleaders help with preparations Thursday night and at the breakfast on Friday.Business participating in the breakfast include the following:

2005-11-11 - Columbia, KY - Photo Staff. Cedar Top Road, Clay Ridge, Adair County, was well represented at the Veterans Day Breakfast at Wal-Mart this morning. From left, are Jodie Cooper, a 20-year-Air Force retiree who now attends UK working on a Masters Degree; neighbor Gordon Crump, longtime editor of the Columbia, KY, Daily Statesman; and Tim Cooper, a 20-year-Air Force Veteran who is working toward a Christian Ministry degree at Lindsey Wilson and who is associate pastor at Praise Assembly of God in Columbia. The Coopers are fourth year Adair Countians, incomers from Florida, though she is originally from Michigan; Tim Cooper e is from Rocport, IN. Mr. Crump, a Korean Conflict and Vietnam veteran, is now working on two books. One is to be entitled, "The Civil War: The Day the War Ended"; the other will be a book of short shorts, set in the same time frame,, and area, along the Oregon Trail ending in Wyoming.

Veterans Day 2005: Jennifer, Johnny Biggs



2005-11-11 - Colmbia, KY - Photo Staff. Mt. Carmel, Adair CO, KY, was well represented at the Veterans Day celebration at Wal-Mart. Jennifer Biggs came with her father, Johnnie Biggs. Mr. Biggs is a veteran of the Korean Conflict. Mr. Biggs specifically noted that he lives in neither Cane Valley nor Coburg. "Mt. Carmel," he said, "next door to the Mt. Carmel Christian Church." He received the Purple Heart for a wound he received "on a little hill right in front of Heartbreak Ridge." He was drafted for service, and stayed "17 months and 11 days." Behind Mr. Biggs, Jane and Carl Hutchsion can be made out. The couple behind Jennifer Biggs, are a favorite Bliss, Adair County, Kentucky, couple, Mr. and Mrs. James Edwin Shirley.

Veterans Day 2005: Bill Spicer, Kenneth Scott



2005-11-11 - Columbia, KY - Photo Staff. Bill Spicer and Kenneth Scott both members of the Columbia VFW Post 6097 Color Guard. Mr. Spicer was a member of the US Marine Corps, and is a retired UK Extension Agent. Mr. Scott, a Bliss farmer, is retired after a career in Houchens Markets management and served in the Army in Korea.

2005-11-11 . Cyndi Crowder directs the pride of Colonel William Casey Elementary School, the ENCORE Choir. The children sang patriotic songs, and, as usual, delivered an outstanding performance, singing "Star Spangled Banner," and "A Salute to Veterans."

Franklin and Montgomery win VFW essay writing contest



2005-11-22 - Columbia, KY - Photo courtesy of ACMS. VETERANS, TEACHERS AND STUDENTS SHARE THE SPOTLIGHT. Adair County Middle School participated in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Patriotic Essay Writing Contest through Mr. Gary Curry's social studies classes and Ms. Rhonda Blankenship's writing classes. The two school winners were Don Franklin, Jr. from the 8th grade and Ryan Montgomery from the 7th grade. Ryan Montgomery was the overall winnerof the contest.
