Candidates for 2006 election can file today, Wednesday, November 9, 2005

Seventh District Magistrate Terry Farris is latest to announce for County Judge. He'll file for the Democratic nomination this morning.
When the door of the County Court Clerk's office opens this morning, Wednesday, November 9, expect an early flurry of candidate filings.

Seventh District Magistrate Terry Farris said he will file today for the Democratic nomination for Adair County Judge. Carl Arnold, the party's nominee in the last two elections, is believed ready to enter the race, too.

Other Democrats known to be thinking about a run for the top job are Second District Magistrate Wid Harris, Fourth District Magistrate J.M. Shelley. Former Judge Richard Lee Walker always says that if he were 12 years younger, he would be a candidate. But not everyone believes he can't be persuaded to join the race.

On the Republican side, Adair County Court Clerk Ann Melton has announced for County Judge Executive. Adair County Schools Grants writer Sammy Taylor is a definite entrant, and Joyce Reliford has indicated she will run. Hilda Legg is gets mention often as a possible candidate.

Jennifer Hutchison, the incumbent Republican County Attorney, said last night that she will file for re-election today if her schedule permits.

Two offices in the courthouse are subject to passing tests. One is held by Democrat Circuit Court Dennis Loy, who said Monday he is seeking re-election, and that he'd heard someone has applied to take the test, but that he didn't know who. The other is held by Democrat Wm. M. Feese, Jr. He has said that he will be a candidate for re-election.

Race for seat Farris will leave vacant may draw several candidates

With Terry Farris running for county judge, the field may widen for the chance to succeed him as the District 7 magistrate. Paul Turner is running for the Republican nomination, but former Magistrate Russell Guy Perkins may present strong opposition in the Republican primary. Democrat Wesley Taylor may be a candidate.

In District 4, J.M. Shelley has not said that he will seek re-election. But there is a candidate for the Republican nomination in the 3-to-1 Republican stronghold. Perry Reeder, current Republican Party Chairman will be a candidate for his party's nomination.

Democratic Coroner Rick Wilson has said that he will seek re-election, and Republican William "Bug" Knight will run for another term as Jailer. Mr. Knight says he does not know who it will be, but he expects one or more opponents.

Sheriff Steve Cheatham announced early this year that he will seek another term. He's a Democrat, and primary opposition isn't expected. But on the Republican side, most expect former Sheriff Ralph Curry to run to regain his old job; and they believe Mr. Sexton will run again.

Candidates may file through January 31, 2006 for county offices. City candidates can file during the November 9, 2005-January 31, 2006 period if they wish, but they also have the option of waiting until August 2006.
