Basketball: LWC Men continue hot streak

Lindsey Wilson men's basketball continued its hot streak at home and won its fourth straight game at Biggers Sports Center on Thursday night against the University of the Cumberlands (KY), 89-77. The Blue Raiders improved to 7-7 at home and picked up its 10th win this season.

LWC finished the game with at least four players in double figures and a few just shy in this dominant win.

Johrdon Mumford led all scorers with 17 points along with five rebounds on 5-9 shooting. Blue Raider guards Rodney Lewis and Payton Cundiff followed Mumford's offensive lead and contributed 13 of their own along with 10 points from senior guard Jamyus Jones. All four Blue Raiders finished perfect at the charity stripe for a combined 15-15 as Lindsey Wilson ended 21-24 at the line as a team.

The Blue Raiders started out firing from the jump as they made three straight threes to build on an early 9-3 lead. LWC got ahead in the first half but the Patriots retaliated with a quick run of their own to take the lead back by midway through the half.

A Jones three pointer sparked a 17-3 run from that point which gave Lindsey Wilson a comfortable lead heading into the final minutes of the half. Eighteen first half points from the bench and 50% from beyond the arc helped the Blue Raiders enter halftime with a 44-29 lead.

Cumberlands came out of the locker room with a sense of urgency along with some scrappy play on both ends that led the deficit being cut under 10 within the first two minutes of play. The Patriots had three players in double figures as they continued to chip away at the LWC lead.

Lindsey Wilson started to click on all cylinders in the second half to protect its lead as they dominated the glass by out rebounding Cumberlands 31-24 and scoring 21 points off 13 Patriot turnovers. Lucas Ribeiro finished with a team-high eight rebounds followed by Veron Kalonji and Mumford with five apiece.

LWC held on long enough to hold off Cumberlands till the final buzzer to go on and defeat the Patriots 89-77 to improve their overall record to 10-16.

The Blue Raiders will hit the road for their final regular season matchup against No. 10-ranked Georgetown College (KY) in Georgetown, Kentucky on Saturday, February 18 at 2pmCT.
