Black History Celebration at Capitol is Feb 7

From Mike Wynn, LRC

Frankfort, KY - The lasting contributions of African Americans to our nation's past and future will take center stage next week as the Kentucky Black Legislative Caucus hosts the annual Black History Celebration in the Capitol Rotunda.

With a theme of "Black History is American History," elected officials, community leaders and advocates will gather from across the state to commemorate significant events from the Black experience that have shaped our country over hundreds of years.

The ceremony begins at 11amET on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, in the Capitol Rotunda, and it is open to the public.

"The Black community has played a vital role in the history of this state and country," said Senate Democratic Leader Gerald A. Neal, a member of the Black Legislative Caucus and lead organizer of the event. "We want to take a moment to reflect on this rich and complex legacy, which took root long before America was formed and remains central to our collective progress today."

Speakers for the event will include Gov. Andy Beshear, Chief Justice Laurance B. VanMeter, legislative leaders and members of the Black Legislative Caucus.

Charles Blatcher III, chairman of the National Coalition of Black Veteran Organizations and a U.S. Navy veteran, will provide this year's keynote address while also discussing recent efforts to designate a 98-mile stretch of U.S. Highway 68 as the "Brigadier General Charles Young Corridor."

Young, a native of Mays Lick, Kentucky, was born to enslaved parents in 1864. Throughout an extraordinary life and career that broke many of the era's racial barriers, he served as a civil rights leader, educator, diplomat and military officer. Since 2020, Young has been posthumously promoted to Brigadier General on both the state and federal level.

Tuesday's celebration will also feature a presentation of the 2023 Legacy Award and live musical performances from the Simmons College Concert Choir.
