LETTER: Dr. Grubbs asks Council to override P&Z recommendation I ask the City Council to vote against the zone change, and I encourage neighbors and Columbia citizens who oppose "spot zoning" and who wish to discourage further commercial development of our residential neighborhoods to voice their concern. - MORRIS GRUBBS Zoning change coming up for Council approval Tuesday, October 18, 2005 Dear Editor: On Tuesday, October 18th, at 6:00 p.m. in City Hall, the Columbia City Council will consider a recommendation from the Columbia Planning and Zoning Commission to change the zoning of property at 503 Greensburg Street from Residential to Commercial. Although the block building on this lot has been used for a series of small businesses (most recently House of Styles, which relocated last year), the lot has remained zoned Residential. The new co-owners have plans to double the size of the building in order to operate a dry cleaners. Because prior businesses operating in the existing building were grandfathered in, expansion of the building will require that the zoning be changed once and for all to Commercial. My wife and I live in a home beside the property in question, and we strongly oppose the zoning change because such a move would (a) extend and further encourage commercial development of the Citys last primarily residential spoke off the Courthouse wheel; We and other residents of Greensburg Street voiced our concerns last month at the Planning and Zoning hearing. We see this as a critical moment in the history of this property and this neighborhood. I ask the City Council to vote against the zone change, and I encourage neighbors and Columbia citizens who oppose "spot zoning" and who wish to discourage further commercial development of our residential neighborhoods to voice their concern. Sincerely, Morris A.
