LWC's Safe Halloween serves 540 children and families

Columbia resident and mom Jill Smith says LWC's annual "Safe Halloween" is a positive alternative for families looking for a safe space to enjoy the holiday festivities with their children.

"The kids look up to these college students it's just a really positive event," said Smith, who brought her 9-year-old son, Jack (dressed as Michael Jackson), to campus. "We were excited to find out the College was bringing the event back. It's safe, mostly indoors and Lindsey Wilson always does a great job in our community."

Lindsey Wilson College hosted more than 540 area children and gave away 400 bags of candy on Monday night at the campus' 28th-annual "Safe Halloween." LWC students escorted children and their family members from the Holloway Health & Wellness Center through four residence halls decorated in various family-friendly themes.

One student, Keyarron Goines, from Henderson, Kentucky, had been preparing for more than two months for the night of fun and fright.

"With the help of a friend, we made this (Chucky) mask by molding and cutting out the shape of the face," said Goines, a freshman member of the College's track and field program. "It took me two months and ten days to make. My late grandfather was creative and I thought it was pretty cool, so I thought I would give it a try."

This was the first year LWC was able to host "Safe Halloween" without restrictions since 2019 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Students prepared for the visiting children by dressing in costumes related to the theme of their residence hall: Phillips Hall as Disney's Toy Story; Keefe Hall as DreamWork's Shrek; Parrot Hall as the popular video game Minecraft; and Horton Hall served as a safe "haunted" hall.
