Travel: California, 3 National Parks & Big Sur Coastal Area

Robert has been sharing beautiful photos from an early summer trip out West. We'll be adding them to this story so that you can view them in one place. --CM

By Robert Ellis

There was much planning for this mid~June trip starting in February. Tammy, as it turns out, is a natural when it comes to creating a carefully crafted itinerary. The booking of flights, hotels, car rental had to be secured. Then putting all of the pieces of this puzzle together was no small task.

Every trip seems to get better; or maybe we're just getting more accustomed to the rigors and demands of travel. At any rate, my years of longing to see California, as well as those parks became a reality and in the end it was a wonderful getaway.

In a nutshell, the trip would play out as follows: fly into Fresno, CA, pickup the rental car and overnight at Oakhurst. Next morning straight into Yosemite National Park. Two days was spent exploring Yosemite, then off to Kings Canyon National Park. Overnighted in Kings Canyon, and then over to Sequoia National Park. Lastly the trip ended with playing in the Pacific Ocean... Big Sur Area. Total mileage on the rental car~1000 miles.

Travel: Rock Cairns at Hearst San Simeon State Park, California

2022-08-17 - San Simeon, CA - Photo By Robert Ellis, Robert Ellis Woodworking.
Robert writes, "The ocean, sand and roaring beach does have a tendency to bring out the kid in all of us. I snuck away from my fellow travelers and created this little beach scene...and of course waited on the gulls to perform a fly over.

What a contrast this area of California is to the Parks we just left...going from 105 degrees to mid 60's in the space of an hour. Cold Alaskan waters are one of the reasons for the year round, cooler temperatures for this part of the coastline.

I smiled and walked away as I disassembled the Cairn and left it back again in its natural state."

Travel: Entrance to Moonstone Beach

Robert writes, "This beach scene was one of the last days we spent in California visiting the coast and three of their National Parks. Since we took the trip in mid-June, before the start of Summer, we were able to see some nice waterfalls in Yosemite and Kings Canyon National Parks, and we were also able to visit Sequoia National Park right before the recent fires that occurred days after we left that Park."

Travel: Lower Yosemite Falls

2022-08-20 - Yosemite National Park - Photo By Robert Ellis, Robert Ellis Woodworking.
Robert writes, "With 3-4 million visitors a year and now, due to popularity, reserved entry just to drive into the park you will encounter lots of folks. Being a photographer and expecting to capture an image of a place or scene, that has been photographed hundreds of millions of times... and without people just isn't happening. So, I say, add the people in the photo. Sometimes an interesting photo or scene will play out before your eyes.

I counted over 30+ people in this pic."

Travel: Yosemite National Park, California

Robert writes, "Tioga road follows along the top of the mountains in Yosemite Park and for whatever the reason, about 80% of the park visitors never travel over it. At this stop, named Olmsted Point, you arrive at a higher elevation (8,300 feet) and you get a good view of the famous half dome. It is the knob at the right, far off looking into the horizon."

Robert writes, "General Sherman, Worlds largest tree, measured by volume. It is difficult to capture the enormity of its size and grandeur, but looking at the crowds around it sorta hints at its size. Over 36 feet in diameter at the base. Photo taken early June, 2022."

Travel: Moro Rock, Sequoia National Park, CA

2022-09-01 - Sequoia National Park, California - Photo By Robert Ellis, Robert Ellis Woodworking.
Robert writes, "This Dome, named Moro Rock, is nestled within Sequoia Park. It is a very popular hike; by merely catching one of the Park's shuttle busses you can be dropped off at the starting point of the climb. It's a relatively short 1/2 mile hike to the top and back.. .but with over 350 steps, and blend in a little mix of fear of heights (if you have that fear) this makes for a really fun hike. When you reach the summit, you're at an elevation of 6,725 feet, with awesome views of the Sierra Nevada mountain range."
