Phillip Coffey - Ole Keltner School

Ole Keltner School - By Phillip Coffey

Drawing a blank in my memory looking at this 8 x 10-inch white page
Lined very similar, as I warmed myself by the wood heating stove - at
Keltner school long ago, maybe speaking out of turn - standing in the corner.
Not many of us that went to that seat of our first formal education - left.

Years before K.E.T. or many of us would learn of earthly, widespread distrust.
No more walking to Fall daily revivals to the only church, "Pleasant Ridge Methodist "
Just about a quarter of a mile out the road, there and the General store were only places to gather.
Listening to the transistor radio as war pilot hero John Glenn went beyond the Stratosphere

To orbit the globe in a small capsule returning, landing in the Ocean - later to a hero welcoming.
Pass me my ink bottle, jot down all the alphabet I may know in a row-scribble some numbers - add them all up.
Someone just requested to be excused from the building to exit through the only door - aligned with Keltner Road
Excrete some bodily fluids in the wooden outbuilding - no unnecessary flushing - Can't hear their footsteps in the snow

But I can see their familiar head bobbing just slightly above the lower window seals - soon they will be returning.
There is never any tarrying outside in this season of extreme cold, they will be very helpful to me with my spelling.
Walking to the source of our water with a cousin in warm weather about a quarter of a mile away to a farmer's spring.
There he and I would always tarry, making up games to play, 'don't want to go back to that ole schoolhouse, anyway'.

Finally bring back some water, 'What took you so long?', always managed to come up with something - creative.
Well, I have a few lines, writing something on this most listless of a day - back to the 21st Century, rummaging through
Decades of a lifetime, so many changes - some humdrum, some grief, lots of joy in greetings - reminiscing about lifelong pals.
