LETTER: Praise for Burkesville Art, those who promote it New Riverboat Mural celebrates city's riverboat landing history "The Cumberland must be a happy stream. I think I could enjoy traveling with it in the midst of such beauty all my life." - JOHN MUIR Photo accompanies this article; watch for additional photo When famed naturalist John Muir traveled throughout southern Kentucky, he was so impressed by its breathtaking beauty that he described it in his book "Thousand Mile Walk to the Gulf." The man known as "the father of our national parks" wrote: "The scenery on approaching the Cumberland River becomes still grander....Burkesville, in beautiful location, is embosomed in a glorious array of verdant flowering hills. The Cumberland must be a happy stream. I think I could enjoy traveling with it in the midst of such beauty all my life." The beauty of Burkesville and the Cumberland has recently been greatly enhancedwith the addition of the beautiful "River Boat" mural on South Main Street and the artistic screens "portraits of the past" on the old Parkway hotel building, now the law office of Lindsey Bell. I hope the good people of Cumberland County appreciate Phyllis Smith and Laura Lee Butler who worked so hard on getting the funding for these projects. Each shared their time, talents and resources in the hope of making Burkesville a more beautiful town. I could not believe that two days after Phyllis Smith had brain surgery that she called me and was working on getting the ceremony set up for the"Portraits of the Past, doing some last minute work in preparation of the mural project, along with some future ideas of beautification for Burkesville and Cumberland County. All who know Phyllis Smith knows that she loves the City of Burkesville and Cumberland County and will give her all, even during times of serious illness. She is indeed a trooper! I also want to commend your local artists Charlotte Fudge and Pat Ritter for sharing their artistic talents. They both are superb artists. On an extremely hot day, I watched these two ladies paint on the river boat scene, and I must tell you, I did not hear one complaint about the weather even though sweat was pouring off them. Cumberland County is so fortunate to have these two great artists. You are also blessed to have local people, such as Lindsey Bell and Effie Johnson, who are willing to allow their buildings to be used in order for the projects to become a reality. This shows leaders with pride and community spirit. I have always said that Burkesville could be the most beautiful town in southern Kentucky. I am so proud that you have volunteer leaders who are working to make this possible. It has been a joy for me to work with your leaders for the past six years on SEKTDA projects. Signed, Sue Cravens Stivers SEKTDA Executive Board Member and Vice Chairman of Heartland Waterways Corridor Editor's note: The new River Boat mural in Burkesville drew praise from Columbia art patron Sue Stivers, who shared this letter she also sent to the Cumberland County News in Burkesville. Mrs. Stivers' words are of particular interest to those of us who think that one of the best things about Adair County is that it neighbors Cumberland County, a place with gentle grandeur that is just plain good for the soul. Mrs. Stivers reinforces the message on the signs at the city's entrances, that, indeed, Burkesville is Kentucky's best kept secret. This story was posted on 2005-09-01 17:30:00
