LOCAL HISTORY FROM CYRUS: A little over 60 years, the Public Square got all lit FROM OUR PAST: White Way For City of Columbia The first hint of this momentous occasion appeared in the May 31, 1944 edition of the Adair County News: Following a recent meeting of the Columbia City Council it was announced that the Community Public Service Company, who furnishes the city with electricity, has agreed to install a "white way" on the Public Square. [Information posted at answers.com states, "A street with lights was referred to as a white way during the early 20th century." -- Cyrus.] N.P. Foundations for the twelve light standards which will soon be placed around the Public Square are now being erected by the Community Public Service Co. According to N.P. Bray, manager, the work will be completed at an early date and the standards will be installed as soon as possible... ***** This time, "as soon as possible" proved to be quite soon indeed, and the first lighting of the Square, which occurred on May 24th, was reported in the May 30 edition: Columbia's Business Section Is Improved Lights appeared for the first time Thursday night in the white way recently installed on the Public Square by the Community Public Service Co. The new lights add greatly to the appearance of the Square at night and give Columbia a more up-to-date appearance. The Fiscal Court is considering having similar lights placed on either side of the two entrances to the Court House which will further improve the downtownsection...
