About those rising electric costs from TRECC

Veronica stayed on the phone to get answers to her high electric bills. A clerical error is partly to blame, as are extreme cold temperatures and rising costs in general. Expect some of the increases to stick around for at least another month.

I was one of many many customers who were shocked by their last electric bill. The Taylor County REC Power Cooperative had a wait time on the phone for over 60 minutes when I first called. I had the time so I stayed on the phone waiting. I had questions and needed answers.

For example: my bill tripled in cost. My wattage usage increased from around 1200kwh to over 3000kwh. What's going on here? Even in the barn, which has its own meter, doubled and there aren't any large appliances or heating units out there... What's going on?

Actually, the customer service agent was very helpful. She was patient and answered every one of my questions as best she could. We went day by day and discussed appliances and settings for them. We looked at averages for me and other costumers. She even stated that Taylor County Rec can spread the large bill over several months without any actual in person visits to the office being required. She said there are ways to help and was ready to start when I just said, "Please help."


So while apparently my AC unit/heat pump is the main reason why my bill was so high, even though I keep the house at 65*, the subfreezing temps make the system automatically turn on emergency heat. This is a feature designed to keep the unit from breaking and burning out the motor when the outside air is just too cold for the system to warm it up and release the air into the system. The unit will switch back to regular heat when the temps go back up in the warmer parts of the day. So, my wattage usage really was up.

BUT the other fun part of the bill was that Taylor County Rec under charged ALL of their customers last month. A clerical error caused everyone to have a credit when it should not have been but a deficit. There is a message about this on the bill, clearly staying it. There was also a message on their website about it. So this month, in addition to the extra you had to pay because your AC Unit/heat pump was trying not to burn out during a record cold winter, you also had to pay the extra amount from the previous month which was warmer.

Taylor County Rec customer service agent advised me that she hopes that the fuel service charge fee won't continue all year but we should anticipate paying it again in March for the month of February. It has been a credit for the last several years but now due to inflation, rising costs, supply chain issues, and every other cause we hear on the news... We will have higher costs on power regardless if your wattage goes back down.

In short, if you have questions, call them. If you need help paying the bill or at least just spreading it over the next few months, call them. The wait on the phone was a long one as they serve 4 counties, but it was worth it to get the answers I needed. The customer service agent said they have had the huge influx of calls all week and believe it will continue into next week as the bills are being sent out, read and customers freaking out. Take a second. Breathe. Call if you have questions. Both numbers listed on the top of your bill go to the same call center, push option #3 information about your account.
