Jobless rates up in 76 counties from May 2004 to May 2005

  • Adair County unemployment rises to 5.091%

  • County ranks third best employment in 7 county area
Adair County's unemployment rose from 4.8% in April 2005 to 5.091% in May 2005.

The Kentucky Education Cabinet's report shows that 8,202 of Adair County's 8,642 civilian labor force was employed during the period.


In the seven county area, Adair County ranked third best in the jobs picture, after Metcalfe County and Taylor County.

State Report: Jobless rates up in 76 counties from May 2004 to May 2005

FRANKFORT, Ky. (June 30, 2005) - Unemployment rates rose in 76 Kentuckycounties between May 2004 and May 2005, fell in 39 counties and stayed thesame in five counties, according to the Kentucky Office of Employment andTraining in the Education Cabinet.

In May 2005, one county had a jobless rate at or above 10 percent,and two counties recorded double-digit rates in May 2004.Woodford County's 4.1 percent jobless rate was the lowest in thecommonwealth.

Other low rates were recorded in Anderson, Jessamine andOldham counties, 4.3 percent each; Fayette and Boone counties, 4.4 percenteach; Barren, Franklin and Shelby, 4.5 percent each; and Kenton and Spencercounties, 4.6 percent each.

Magoffin County recorded the state's highest unemployment rate - 11.6percent. It was followed by Elliott County, 9.7 percent, Wolfe County, 9.6percent; Graves County, 9.5 percent; Lewis and Nicholas counties, 8.5percent each; Clay County, 8.4 percent; McCreary and Muhlenberg counties,8.3 percent each; and Leslie County, 8.2 percent.

Unemployment statistics are based on estimates and are compiled tomeasure trends rather than actually to count people working. Civilian laborforce statistics include non-military workers and unemployed Kentuckians whoare actively seeking work. They do not include unemployed Kentuckians whohave not looked for employment within the past four weeks. The statistics inthis news release are not seasonally adjusted to allow for comparisonsbetween United States, state and counties figures.
