James Roberts (J.R.) Bottoms, 73, Knifley, KY native (1948-2021)

James Roberts (J.R.) Bottoms of Brooks, KY, passed away on Friday, December 31, 2021, at Baptist Health Floyd in New Albany, IN. He was 73 years old.

Funeral services will be private.

Visitation will be from 4pmET until 8pmET on Thursday, January 6, 2022, at the Hall-Taylor Funeral Home, 52 West Main St., Taylorsville, KY. Masks are required, and the family requests fist bumps instead of hugs and that visitors wear casual attire.


Born in Knifley, Kentucky, he was the son of the late Robert Daniel and Marilyn Lawson Bottoms, and the widower of Bonita Martin Bottoms. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War. A lifelong fisherman and hunter, he took great pleasure in practicing shooting his crossbow, and his memberships included the National Rifle Association. He enjoyed food and the Waffle House was his favorite restaurant. In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by two sisters.

His survivors include his daughters, Victoria MacFarlane and her husband, John, of Stryker, Ohio, and Paula Butler and her husband, Robert, of Elizabethtown; his son, James W. Bottoms of Bloomington, Illinois; his brothers, Roger Bottoms, Paul Bottoms, David Bottoms, Eddie Bottoms, Cliff White, Dwight White, and Terry White; his sisters, Trudy Singleton and Debbie Bottoms; and his seven grandchildren and his nine great-grandchildren.

Expressions of sympathy may take the form of contributions to the American Cancer Society, 1640 Lyndon Farm Court, Suite 104, Louisville, Kentucky 40223, or to the Wounded Warrior Project, 223 Rosa L. Parks Avenue, Suite 301, Nashville, Tennessee 37203.
