Houses on the move so Highway 61 changes can begin Highway 61 expansion is the reason some houses between downtown Columbia and the caution light are being sold to be moved, loaded onto trucks and given new locations. The offer of 'home for sale to be moved' came at just the right time for the Curry family. Phyllis and Clifton Curry are helping their children, Dwain and Tammy, acquire homes. Phyllis, owner of the Flatwoods Grocery, said they were interested in this house because they had been in it many times. It was formerly owned by Clifton's sister Maggie Janes and had been built by Jimmy Firkins. Phyllis called the 800 number on the banner at the house and worked with the company from London, KY, which contracts with the state to remove buildings. Once the agreement was made and the site prepared, the house was moved in one day. Clifton, who works for the Adair County Water District, took care of the concrete footer after neighboring land owner J.C. Lasley did the bulldozing work to prepare for the house to be re-settled in its new location. They plan to cover the house with siding rather than the original stone after they do some repairs to the woodwork. The house will front on the new Highway 61 once the road is straightened, dividing the house and three acres from the original Curry farm. Phyllis and Clifton say they are proud to be able to help their children, and their four grandchildren, Kyle, Kayla, Brandon and Natalie. This story was posted on 2005-05-24 12:47:20
