Some Marrowbone Carthartt laid-off workers eligible for special assistance

Workers laid off by Carhartt Inc. inMarrowbone may be eligible for Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA), the Officeof Employment and Training (OET) in the Department for Workforce Investmentannounced Monday, May 23, 2005.

The U.S. Department of Labor has certified the company as an"adversely affected employer" under the federal Trade Act, which providesassistance to employees of businesses and industries hurt by importcompetition.

The certification covers workers who were laid off by the company onor after April 20, 2004. Laid-off employees who exhausted their unemploymentinsurance benefits before they were called back to work or found another jobalso may be eligible for retroactive benefits.

Qualified workers may apply for financial assistance, training andjob search and relocation assistance. This assistance will be availablethrough April 27, 2007.

Affected workers should inquire about benefits as soon as possibleat a local OET office. Applications may be filed at the Somerset CareerCenter, 410 E. Mt. Vernon, Somerset. The telephone number is 606-677-4124.The Kentucky Education Cabinet coordinates learning programs from P-16, andmanages and supports training and employment functions in the Department forWorkforce Investment.
